Top Down.

After an early morning in Boston photographing airplanes, I took an opportunity with a few friends to go see BO-1, the nearly defunct Boston Local.

While waiting for the local to move back South into the capital, an inbound commuter train carrying Thursday’s lunch rush would provide a photo opportunity from the top of the Salem “Intermodal” Station parking garage.

Friday Lighting at Readville.

This was hands down the best-lit train within my few hours spent at Readville over the past couple of days. With smoke drifting Southeast from Canadian Wildfires, haze filled the sky once again, giving the sun an orange tint to its light.

After a quick downtime, the silence of Hyde Park quickly melted into the roar of a commuter rail. MBTA 855 with F40 1074 clattered by on the middle track destined for Stoughton.

Suns Out in Scarborough.

It would only take 24 days following Pan Am’s extinction for CSX to saddle an SD40-2 on a train out of Portland. CSXT 8872, an aforementioned SD40-2, would be the first of its type to lead a CSX train over the corporation's newly acquired assets (at the time).

I took the liberty of driving the 91 miles from my hometown to the outskirts of Portland to get a glimpse and a few shots of the 54-year-old (at the time) locomotive. But of course, this is the railroad; and two good things can’t happen in a row! I would end up making it up to Scarborough with plenty of time to spare. It would end up that the engineer and conductor would have trouble cutting in the PTC system, which held them back for quite some time.

Following a little bit of waiting and chatting with friends, M427 with CSXT 8872 waved goodbye to Rigby Yard just before 15:20:00 hrs. The engineer on the throttle got the train moving, as they were well on the verge of track speed coming out of the gate at CPF-201.

Two & Two. CSX M427 in Clinton, MA yesterday was seen from the Fitchburg Secondary.

If you know me well, you’ll know that I love Honda’s Civic lineup, predominantly anything from 2016-2021. You’d also know that I’m an absolute sucker for an SD40-2, whenever they’re able to come around. I didn’t notice it until post-editing, but I happened to get two of my favorite vehicles in one shot!

Granted, three Civics at the time were in this lot together. The one I drive was just out of frame, but two others remained noticeable while M427 with CSXT 8014 divided the town of 15,000. One tenth-generation Civic (left) and one eighth-generation (middle-left) both watch the train put on a show bound for Worcester and eventually Selkirk.

Settled in 1654, and officially established in 1850, Clinton, MA is a favorite spot for photographers. Located along the Worcester Mainline, the town still hosts many brick buildings near the tracks, providing a great frame. Two CSX lines meet in this part of town; the aforementioned Worcester Mainline and the Fitchburg Secondary are both used most days of the week. Once trains pass over Sterling St., (for Westbound) they’ll duck under the Fitchburg secondary, before continuing to points South/West.

FURX in Command. New Hampshire Northcoast D8 proceeds West from Tri-City with FURX 5509.

March brought above-average temperatures to New England, with many days reaching at or near 50°F. In addition to the warm weather, daylight savings provided much more time to get pictures while the sun remained high.

Buds on the trees haven’t quite started to bloom just yet, so stick season still hangs around for the moment. New Hampshire’s selection of Evergreen Trees provides a little color contrast among the dead brush, which I don’t mind at all.

After working Eastern Propane and Rochester’s Ossipee Aggregates for what seemed like decades, NHN D8 roars West with all three of their rostered EMD GP38-2s. Today’s train had the th*****me of four-axel locomotives reversed, as 5509 would normally lead D7 (East) while 3825, trailing three of three, would lead D8 West. Before that configuration, NHN had both of their green machines facing East and West while 5509 sat in the middle.

I didn’t mind the reversed order, as 5509 is my favorite of NHN’s small roster of locomotives. While it may not be painted or numbered to the railroad’s specifications, it sports a unique Old Cast P5 and FURX’s signature paint scheme which I have come to love. While most of my friends disagree with my opinion regarding 5509, I still find it humorous to remark; “Correct Leader!” despite them thinking I’m insane.

Reverse Oxidation. CSXT 1712 makes another appearance on Pan Am’s network, this time with better conditions.

Here’s another post glossing CSXT 1712, one of CSX Transportation’s SD40E3 ‘Eco Units.’ 1712 took another spin around New England, trudging through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine for the second week in succession. On this cold Saturday, time was on the side of many young railfans who swamped North Central Massachusetts for a glimpse of the Eco’s second go at handling M427.

Following a less-than-ideal shot at CPF-309, it was in the best interest to take advantage of one of Ayer’s unique structures for a frame. West Main Street Bridge (MA A19003) suspends a brief portion of the 98.5-mile-long Massachusetts Route 2A across MBTA’s Fitchburg Line and has been doing so since its construction in 1949. Roughly 16,500 vehicles traverse the 115ft deck daily while remaining uninterrupted by Ayer’s rail traffic. Sometime between 1990 and the early 21st century, the bridge was painted from an oxidized-looking green into a red-bronze.

Today, MA A19003 serves as one of many staples in Ayer’s historic collection of buildings and structures. Thousands of rail photos have integrated the bridge as a backdrop, as Ayer’s MBTA Commuter Rail Station lies nearby giving easy access for a frame. I highly recommend exploring this ‘iconic’ mid-20th century structure, and one of my all-time favorite bridges in Massachusetts.

Snow Place Like Home. The dormant duo of MBTA Russell Snow Plows have found a new, temporary home in Carroll County, NH. New Hampshire Northcoast recently adopted MBTA(X) 2740 and 2746 for their own snow-clearing convenience along the 43-mile Conway Branch between Ossipiee and Rollinsford, NH.

Dubbed, “Plow Extra 1801”, the duo of orange flashed up and down the Eastern border of New Hampshire (and Southern Maine if you really want to get definitive!) sporting their aging “T” marks along with MBTA’s flashy “Snow Plow” decals.

Sandwiched between two loafs of orange was NHN 1801, a GP18 built in 1960 for the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific where she served until it’s demise in 1980. In 1985, New England Southern (NEGS), gave new life to 1801. Now NEGS 503, she served Southern and Central New Hampshire until 2006. By August 2007, she was on property of her new owners and has remained ever since. As of now, NHN 1801 serves a handful of different tasks. With the lack of ACSES II PTC, 1801 unfortunately cannot LEAD sand trains into Boston, however, is still utilized between Ossipee and Dover for local power. 1801 will occasionally fill in on sand trains, when substitution for GP38-2s are needed.

After a week of inspections, and blistering negative degree temperatures, the “Fair Weather Railroad” took the plows for a spin down the Conway Branch. Although plowing wasn’t needed, the wings were still extended to push back banks on the east and west sides of the tracks. After cleaning up the branch, they hit the sand pit to push back any ice or snow that may have accumulated during wave of -40° temperatures that devoured NH.

This was definitely a fun one, despite playing catch-up for most of the time. But I was glad to see familiar faces and smiles all around. The fantastic crew of NHN definitely had fun with this one.

Sister-turnaround.

Here are 2 photos of the same crew, same locomotive, but different trains and weather! My favorite CN train(s) comprise of L531 and its counterpart CN 530 which cross the border from Canada into the United States. The weather took a crazy turn when CN 530 came out of Tift Yard with 60+ MPH gusts of wind and heavy rain.

About a week ago I took a trip out to Buffalo, NY to visit Patrick Wortman Photography to shoot some trains uaround the Buffalo Area. A joke hinting that Patrick never has seen trains in Canada turned into a day trip to see CN, GO Transit and Via Rail’s Canadian!
