The SS Atlantus was one of 12 concrete ships built during WWI used to transport American troops home from Europe and also to transport coal to New England. The SS Atlantus was launched on December 5, 1918 and was retired in 1920. In 1926 the ship was purchased for use in creation of a ferry. In June of 1926, the ship broke free of her moorings during a big storm and ran aground 150 feet of the coast of Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey where she is still partially visible todayabove the waterline.
