I'm SUPER excited about my mini session location this year! I've driven past this private property for years and always thought that it would be an amazing place for portraits! A little creek, with a little wooden bridge over it, color wild flowers, beautiful mature trees, a little meadow... It's a photographers heaven. And it just so happens the my friend owns it! So I got the courage to ask her if I could use it for my minis this year and she agreed! I'm really looking forward to creating beautiful portraits there!

My mini sign ups are live and I have a few spots left! I might add a few more spots if these book up, but my availability is limited this year.

September is one of my favorite months. The air starts to get cooler, the leaves start to change colors, we get back into the routines of school and work. September paves the way for October, with the crisp cool nights are what I wait all year for.

With that being said, my September and October are extremely busy this year between solo parenting my 4 kids for a few months, the bookshops one year anniversary, all the back to school activities for 4 kids and sports seasons for 2 of them. And it's also one of the busiest (and best) times of year for outdoor portraits. I'm trying REALLY hard to fit everyone in without completely burning myself out so if you want a senior or family session in September and October, reach out to me today so I can find a spot for you on my calendar!

Also my mini session dates are live!!

I've been thinking a lot lately about how much this "little" photography business has taught me.

What started with a camera became an education in sales, marketing, accounting, customer service, leadership, pricing, negotiation, technology and about 400 other things I never realized I was signing up for. 😂

Over the years I've photographed thousands of people, built a team, worked with incredible families and businesses, and turned photography into a business that has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue. And then opened another business with my husband because one small business wasn't enough. 🤣

But lately I've realized something else: I actually really enjoy helping other photographers and businesses figure this stuff out.

Taking beautiful photographs is one thing, but figuring out how to make a living doing it is an entirely different challenge.

I've been a professional photographer for over 8 years now and one of the things brought up in the conferences I attend the most is pricing. It is SCARY raising your prices as a photographer, but also, being a photographer is a really expensive profession. For example, I just had to spend $1000 on more storage hard drives as the multiple ones I already own are full.

Photographers: one of the most dangerous ways to set your pricing is to look at what everyone else is charging and pick a number somewhere in the middle.

Their expenses aren't your expenses. Their experience isn't your experience. Their volume isn't your volume. Their business model isn't your business model. And you have absolutely no idea whether their business is profitable. Your pricing has to come from YOUR numbers and the business you're trying to build.

This is something I wish more photographers understood early on, because you can be incredibly busy and still have a business that isn't actually making money.

(No, I'm not raising my prices any time soon.)

Senior portraits are interesting because I'm photographing someone right at the edge of two versions of themselves.

They're still someone's kid. But they're also starting to become the adult they're going to be.

That's why I don't want every senior session to look exactly the same or take place in the same spot. I want to know who they are. What they love. What they're proud of. What feels like THEM.

Yes, we need the beautiful yearbook photo. But I also want to create the photographs their parents will look at ten years from now and say, “That was exactly who they were at 17.”

This gorgeous girl was so fun to work with!

One of my favorite things about running a photography business in Central New York is how many completely different kinds of people I've had the opportunity to photograph.

High school seniors. CEOs. Small business owners. Newborn babies. Entire companies. Families I've photographed year after year. Thousands of houses.

And after all of those sessions, here's something I know for certain: Almost everyone thinks they're awkward in front of a camera. (Except for the houses.)

You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need to be photogenic. You don't need to practice your smile. It's MY job to make you look good in front of my lens.

A photographer's job isn't simply to photograph what happens in front of the camera. It's to know how to bring out the best in the person standing there.
