Wes, Kristen and the rookie Everett are so awesome. I met Wes through some mutual low-lifes at the Quarry. He’s a funny dude and the perfect guy for a light-hearted portrait that tells me just a little bit more than what he looks like.

Meet Josh, everybody. Historical photographic process extraordinaire and long time friend. I gotta do this portrait again in a darkroom or film lab when my brain isn’t stretched in too many directions (tintype crash course, shoot portraits, run to byu)

Hey guys! I should probably introduce you to what I'm up to these days (apart from shooting at BYU). I just had a really great time a couple weeks ago shooting the portrait of a long time friend. If you're in need of business portrait refresh, let me help! You may be dusting off the resume, refreshing the website or spicing up those profile pictures. I shoot on large format film - creating a distinct and timeless look that always works. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or check out my website: tanner-frost.com
Cheers!

I just dropped my first YouTube video about photography. All about aperture. The link is in my bio. Laugh at my bad jokes and iffy audio and then comment to teach me something I missed about aperture.

While at Silver Falls SP, I did a morning hike on the Trail of Ten Falls. I hung out at this Poplar (or was it a Maple?) I can’t remember at this point and all my photos are blurry. Nevertheless, I took this photo about 100x at various shutter speeds while timing the little gusts of air rising from the bottom of the waterfall.

I initially fell in love with wilderness and Mother Earth through outdoor recreation, namely rock & ice climbing, and canyoneering. Although, my gut tells me that a portion of that love was innate from birth. Through my 20s, my affection was expressed through outdoor recreation and the camera merely documented that expression. Over time and from a number of influences (too many books), the artifact itself became the expression. Three of those expressions are attached here and are found in the Plogix Gallery - a very exciting development in my journey. Please don't hesitate to reach out for custom sizing and pricing.

Pardon me while I nerd out for a sec. Thank you to Bill Claff and photonstophotos.net for building such a cool website (where I snagged these photos). My take here is far from comprehensive. I'm still learning and want to hear your corrections, footnotes and expertise.

These charts depict the sensor performance of the Sony A7R III (my camera).

The photon transfer curve is the best measure of sensor performance. It shows the signal to noise ratio (SNR). Notice how signal increases more quickly than noise. This confirms the general rule of "expose to the right." The gray lines depict the read noise and photon noise. A significant and predictable (Poisson distribution) portion of image noise originates from photon noise not from camera circuitry, upstream or downstream.

Chart 2: raising the ISO shifts dynamic range to the left clipping highlight data from the RAW file (increasing the gain per photosite limits full well capacity (FWC) of the photosite, limiting highlight data), and including the noise floor (shot noise & upstream noise) in the shadow detail. The jog around ISO 400 occurs because of a change in the analog amplifier - likely Aptina's tech on dual conversion gain per pixel.

Chart 3 tells us how shadow signal is affected in terms of Exposure Value by raising the ISO. Another jog around ISO 500 from that analog amplifier switch-over and another jog upwards at ISO 25600 indicating digital amplification (and noise reduction algorithms) or the land of simulated ISOs instead of "real" or native ISOs. A simulated ISO does exactly what post-processing does except it will include downstream noise in its amplification.

Chart 4: read noise increases as ISO increases. It's the shape of the curve that tells us the most about the sensor design.

Chart 5: When ISO increases, analog amplification goes through technical circuitry changes which produce less noise per electron of signal. Downstream noise will have decreasing impact. This is why some will say a higher ISO actually reduces noise. However, while total noise may be dropping the SNR increases, and upstream and photon noise become more apparent.

Happy Earth Day!
This quote from my favorite author may seem unrelated (or tangential at best) to our relationship with the Earth, how we see it, how we use it, how we cherish and replenish it (or don't - though we've been explicitly told to); but I really think it is. I think they're very much related, like branches extending from the same trunk.

“We also know that growing and preparing food at home can provide family work - work for everybody. And by thus elaborating household chores and obligations, we hope to strengthen the bonds of interest, loyalty, affection, and cooperation that keep families together...
For most people now do seem to think that family life and family work are unnecessary, and this thought has been institutionalized in our economy and in our public values...
TV and other media have learned to suggest with increasing subtlety and callousness - especially, and most wickedly, to children - that it is better to consume than to produce, to buy than to grow or make, to "go out" than to stay home. If you have a TV, your children will be subjected almost from the cradle to an overwhelming insinuation that all worth experiencing is somewhere else and that all worth having must be bought...
There is clearly too narrow a limit on how much money can be made from health, but the profitability of disease - especially disease of spirit or character - has so far, for profiteers, no visible limit."
Wendell Berry, Family Work, 1980

I don't believe it's too much of a reach to say that the assault on the Earth and the assault on the home are branches of the same tree.
