Amazing! I can think of plenty of applications for this.
Military, Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue and of course critical infrastructure inspections of bridges and skeletor towers in lakes and bays.

This would have been handy when I was inspecting the power grid for the power companies. Setting up an autonomous route would have been the biggest time consuming task.

New drone charges itself by perching on power lines, potentially extending flight times indefinitely:

This groundbreaking technology, primarily designed for autonomous power line inspection drones, could have widespread applications across various drone-related tasks.

The drone is built on a commercial frame and equipped with standard drone components like a battery, microcomputer, autopilot module, radar, and camera. Its unique feature is a passively actuated power-line-gripper, housed within a cable guide, which enables it to land on and grip power lines.

When the drone's battery runs low, it uses its camera and radar to locate a power line, then ascends directly towards it. The cable guide directs the line into the gripper, which clamps down on the line without needing any external power. The drone then draws electricity from the power line to recharge its battery. A small amount of upward thrust is all that's needed to activate the gripper, and the power line itself can power the gripper's control circuit under sufficient voltage. In field tests, the drone operated for over two hours, recharging five times during power line inspections.

The researchers are now focusing on enhancing the system's durability for testing in diverse environments and weather conditions. This self-charging drone could significantly expand the capabilities of drones, allowing for longer flight times and continuous operation in various applications and industries
