11/11 - Make a wish. 🌌 Did you see the northern lights on November 11?

What a spectacular show this was! I couldn’t believe I could see the reds so vibrantly with the naked eye. It was super cool to witness from my backyard! I can’t imagine how epic it would have been outside of the city’s light pollution. Glad I could get out and shoot for a bit! 🔦

Loonar Lander 🚀✨ Light painting in the lake!

This image has been floating in my mind for ages, and I finally got to bring it to life in the dark waters of Solberg Lake. With a loon stencil, a light tool, and my camera set to bulb mode, I painted this glowing tribute to Minnesota’s iconic bird.

Huge thanks to and Nate Jones for being my dock crew—helping with gear, blasting tunes, taking videos, and the occasional accidental splash (RIP to my intervalometer… almost 😅).

This is a single exposure: I lit the stencil from behind, capped the lens, refocused, rotated toward the island, and let the clouds soak in the light for 2.5 minutes. No stars this time, but the vibe was right. Big plans for the next shoot—this was just the warm-up.

It felt amazing to be back light painting after a long break. Let’s 🔦🌌

Middleton & Fern Milky Way ⚒️✨

I shot this photo of this historic blacksmith shop last September. I was lying in bed, exhausted after a long day and about to fall asleep. I knew it was a clear night so I decided to check my PhotoPills app to see where the Milky Way was. When I saw that it was right above the building and I knew I had to get up and make this shot happen! 🌌

Foggy Nights🚦

Last night I decided to get out and capitalize on the recent foggy weather we’ve been having. This was a fun little shoot as I had several people stop and ask me what I was doing while I was standing right next to a very busy road with my camera on a tripod. I had a car full of teenagers ask if I was a reporter, then I had a woman laughing as she took a video of me, apparently shocked at the idea of taking photos out in the fog on a Sunday night 😆. A few people rolled down their windows to curiously ask what I was taking pictures of. Definitely the most I’ve been approached while shooting night photos. Hopefully some of them somehow see these images. 😄

Aurora Borealis - October 10, 2024 🌌

The skies were a bit cloudy when we arrived at the river around 8 p.m., but we kept shooting and at around 11:30 p.m. it started to clear up a bit more and the colors really started to dance for us. It was awesome watching them shoot across the sky. 🔦

Pinhole to the Sun - 183 Days of Continuous Exposure ☀️

This is a 6-month long exposure photo taken using a pinhole camera. What you see here are the trails of the sun moving across the sky above the St. Croix river each day from December 26, 2023, to June 26, 2024. This image was captured onto a 3x3” sheet of light-sensitive photographic paper directly in the pinhole camera, which left individual sharp lines as the sun moved across the sky. After I retrieved my pinhole camera, I removed the photo paper, scanned it, inverted the image, and adjusted the contrast slightly. I intentionally exposed this photo from the winter solstice to the summer solstice to capture the sun at both its lowest path and highest path in the sky. 🌞
