Passive and Aggressive

These two pieces came from the same stretch of work, when I was experimenting with gold leaf and natural fiber rice paper in a way I had not before. As I layered the gold, it stopped feeling decorative and started feeling physical, almost like something clawing its way through the surface. That sensation stayed with me as the work took shape.

One piece ended up more passive. It turns inward and feels held, like everything is being kept close and contained. The energy does not go anywhere fast. It sits, absorbs, and builds quietly. There is tension there, but it is internal.

The other piece moved in a more aggressive direction. It pushes outward and feels less patient. The edges are sharper, the form is clearer, and it takes up space instead of pulling back. The gold becomes part of that push, adding to the sense of pressure rather than softening it.

Seen together, they feel like two ways of dealing with the same thing. One holds it in. The other finally pushes back. Neither feels better or worse. They just show different moments of response.

And of the Broken Heart you will Gain Wings to Fly

This piece comes from thinking about what happens after heartbreak, not in the dramatic moment, but in the quieter space that follows. The surface is filled with red hearts, layered and worn, because love and loss tend to repeat themselves. They build over time rather than simply fading away.

At the center, the grey heart is splitting. That moment matters to me. It feels like the turning point. From it, a silver heart begins to form wings, ready to lift away from what once held it in place. They are not meant to fix what broke. They represent what becomes possible because it did.

The metallic surfaces speak to resilience rather than repair. The damage is still there, but it has changed shape. It no longer carries the same weight.

There is one black heart at the edge of the piece, and it stays. Loss does not disappear with healing. It becomes part of the story you carry forward.

This work reflects the moment when pain stops being only heavy and starts to create movement. From what was broken, something lighter forms. From the heart that cracked, wings take shape, and flying becomes possible.

Where the Light Breaks Through

Nature has a way of shifting perspective without permission. Sun breaks through clouds. Wind clears the air. Shadows move and suddenly the shape of something changes. It’s not loud, but it’s unmistakable.

That’s the pause I keep coming back to. The moment when you stop pushing and overthinking and actually notice what’s happening around you. Perspective shifts without effort when you give it space. Clarity doesn’t need to announce itself. It shows up when you slow down enough to let it.

This is about trusting those small resets. Letting nature do what it does best, reminding you to breathe, recall, and move forward with a little more awareness than you had five minutes ago.

Window Seat

Window Seat is inspired by the quiet, reflective moments of air travel, when I look out the window and the world below shifts from detail to pattern. From cruising altitude, the land becomes geometry. Fields, roads, and neighborhoods soften into blocks of color and rhythm, shaped by both human design and natural growth.

In this piece, I wanted to capture that aerial perspective where structure is still present, but everything feels calmer and more expansive. The layered greens reference cultivated landscapes, while the subtle shifts in tone and texture reflect how nothing below is ever truly uniform, even when it looks organized from far away.

This painting is not about a specific place. It is about the experience of passing over many places, watching the earth arrange itself into quiet systems beneath you. It holds that in-between space of travel, where you are moving, yet still, and where time seems to slow just enough to really notice the patterns of the world.

Held in Motion

This piece brings me back to a lot of my travels, especially the places where everyday life depends on the kindness of strangers, small markets, shared rides, borrowed directions, and people helping each other get through the day. In those moments, you really see how much movement and effort it takes just to keep things going, even when the systems around you feel rigid or overwhelming.

The structured lines and patterns reflect those systems: the rules, the routines, the economies that try to keep everything organized and predictable. They sit around the edges, steady and repeating. But inside that, the center is layered, crowded, and always shifting. That part feels like people to me. Not calm, not chaotic, just constantly adjusting and carrying a lot at once.

Nothing in the piece is perfectly straight or settled, and that feels true to how life actually works. Even when things look stable from the outside, there is always movement underneath, always people figuring things out in real time.

Held in Motion is really about that balance, how we are supported and constrained by the structures around us, but it is the human connection and adaptability that keeps everything moving forward.

Under Pressure

This work came out of feeling pulled in different directions. The pressure of starting something and the pressure of finishing something at the same time. On the surface, the movement feels loose and confident, almost like it is just flowing. That part matters. I wanted it to look like things were moving easily.

Underneath that, the surface is busy and worked. There is a lot happening at once. Marks overlap, get pushed back, and come forward again. That reflects how it actually feels. Even when things look smooth from the outside, there can be a lot of weight underneath.

This work sits in that in-between space. Moving forward while feeling overwhelmed. Holding things together while still trying to let them move.

What Holds
I started here by building something solid. I wanted it to feel like it could stand on its own, like a structure with weight. The triangular shape came naturally, almost like a shelter or a marker you pass through. I worked in layers, letting earlier marks sit just under the surface. Some things get covered, but they are still there. This work is about foundation. About what holds you when everything else starts to shift.

This one came from motion. I was thinking about decisions and how quickly things change once you start moving. The diagonal lines cut across the surface on purpose. I wanted interruption and rhythm, like steps or signals. Nothing is meant to settle here. It is about crossing through something, not landing. More about momentum than destination.

I spent the most time here. I let it build slowly and resisted cleaning it up. Lines overlap. Marks get worked back into the surface. Things resurface when you think they are finished. That felt honest. This work is about what stays after movement. The marks you carry with you, whether you want to or not.
