Roaming Sierra Nevada alpine zone above 10,000 feet reveals another world. One with beautiful tiny flora that produce some of the most beautiful wildflower displays… although they are usually tiny.

This is a harsh place where plants have adapted to survive poor or no soil, intense sunlight, low moisture, high winds, long cold winters, and a super short growing season that can be as short as 6 weeks.
They are mostly perennial herbs that grow in low cushions and mats to retain heat and fight the wind. But when they bloom, they shoot up showy flowers to compete for pollinators during the super brief season.

Bodie isn’t just a ghost town. It’s a snapshot of another era and a journey back in time.

This once vibrant mining town grew rapidly after gold was discovered in the late 1800s. At its peak, thousands of people lived here with a bustling economy - hotels, saloons, stores, homes, mills, and the machinery of a town built around the mines. Then, just as quickly, Bodie faded away. By the 1940s, the town was pretty much abandoned.

The buildings remain remarkably frozen in time-weathered wood, walls clad in flattened rusty cans, faded signs, old windows, rusting machinery, and personal belongings still sitting where they were left behind. Peeking into the buildings reveals scenes of life frozen in time. Dusty bottles and children’s toys just left behind.

Walking the streets feels like a journey backward through time. Passing an old Ford pickup. Hanging out in a bathtub in the street. Every doorway and dusty window offering another glimpse into life in a remote mining town.

The mine and mill complex tells the other half of Bodie’s story the enormous effort required to turn Sierra Nevada rock into gold. Ore was hauled from underground workings, crushed and processed through the mill, and separated to recover the precious metal. The scale of the machinery and industrial structures makes it easy to imagine the noise, dust, steam, and relentless work that once filled this valley.

There is an almost endless amount of detail to discover here. Make sure to stop by and support one of California’s great State Historic Parks.

A summer shower in the desert is a beautiful thing.

The smell of wet dusty sage.
The feeling of steamy granite.
…and the colors are just out of this world.
