Bubble-net feeding is one of the most incredible examples of cooperation in the animal kingdom-and we're lucky to see it here in Juneau. Co
§ Have you ever seen whales feed like this?
What is bubble net feeding?
Humpbacks dive below schools of herring and release spirals of bubbles, forming a "net" that traps the fish.
One whale often acts as the "caller," using vocalizations to drive the fish upward into the bubble trap.
This feeding strategy requires precise coordination.
Every whale has a role-some create bubbles, some herd fish, and together they lunge through the net with mouths wide open.
Bubble-net feeding is unique to certain humpback populations. Not all humpbacks know how to do it!
Witnessing this rare cooperation is a reminder of how intelligent and connected these giants are.
