The March bird in the 2025 Birds of Iowa Calendar is the popular White-breasted Nuthatch. If you take in walk in wooded areas in Iowa you will see this agile bird. They get their name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. The White-breasted Nuthatch breeds and lives year around in Iowa. This photo was taken at the Palo Marsh Natural Area this past year.

I was fortunate to see 11 Western Cattle-Egret yesterday at Pleasant Creek Recreation Area. The Western Cattle-Egret is usually found foraging at the feet of grazing cattle. Sometimes they ride on the backs of cattle to pick at ticks. The Western Cattle-Egret is originally from Africa but found its way to North America around 1953. Western Cattle-Egrets don't breed in Iowa but can occasionally show up here. These were stopping over on their migration to the Gulf Coast, Mexico, Central or South America.

The February bird in the 2025 Birds of Iowa Calendar is the Horned Grebe. The Horned Grebe breeds in Canada and Alaska and migrates to the SE states and the coasts of Canada and the US for the winter. This photo was taken at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area in the spring of this year. In this photo the Horned Grebe is decked out in its beautiful breeding colors! Note the fish in its beak.
