PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Stop Draining Lake Corpus Christi would like to express our support for the proposed Inner Harbor Desalination Plant as a necessary and forward-thinking investment in the long-term water security of Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend region.
As our community continues to grow—alongside industrial development, economic expansion, and environmental challenges—it is clear that diversification of our water supply is not a luxury but a necessity. A seawater desalination facility located in the Inner Harbor has the potential to provide a drought-proof source of water, reduce pressure on existing surface and groundwater sources, and support both residential and economic resilience.
That said, our support is not without conditions. We urge city leadership to ensure this project is implemented with strict fiscal responsibility and long-term accountability. This must not be a “blank check” project. Cost controls, transparency in contract ex*****on, independent oversight, and meaningful public input must be foundational elements of the planning and implementation process. We must avoid burdening taxpayers with unchecked costs or rate spikes resulting from mismanagement or unrealistic financial assumptions. We would also encourage our corporate industrial partners to demonstrate leadership through investment in the project.
In short, the Inner Harbor Desalination Plant is a needed and strategic project—but it must be done right. With smart, accountable planning and an unwavering commitment to stewardship, this project can be a lasting asset for our city. Although not perfect, the project truly is our best option at this point. Time waits for no one.
In the meantime, continue to
