This series explores a story of identity by extracting individuals from their original context, either by photographing, appropriating, or scanning old images, documents, and artifacts and assembling them into new photographed landscapes. I “retell” a story where the image acquires a life of its own.
I believe people habitually take too much for granted. Before we know it our identities change. For example, a daughter becomes a mother, then a grandmother, and the circle of life evolves. I seek to increase viewer awareness of how we all cross through time, past to present, changing as we go, striving to connect with each other, as we experience humanity’s changing mark on the world.
In this work, the people represent actual people whose identities change in time. The landscapes are metaphors for life, and the horizons suggest an endless time. The reflective intent allows the viewer to bring their own interpretation and memories into the work.
