The Smocks. 🤍
This is why I’ll never ask your kids to spend an hour standing still and smiling at me.
I want them to run.
I want them to climb the rocks, pick up the sticks, blow the bubbles, annoy their brother, grab Dad’s hand, make Mom laugh and forget for a little while that there’s a camera following them.
Because somewhere in the middle of all of that, you happen.
Not the version of your family that knows they’re being photographed.
You.
The way your son reaches for your hand without looking.
The way your husband watches the boys when they don’t know he’s watching.
The look you give each other when one of the kids does something so completely him that no words are necessary.
The brother who gets too close on purpose.
The belly laugh that ruins the “perfect” picture and makes a better one.
That tiny second when everyone forgets about me.
That’s the photograph I’m waiting for.
Because I’m not trying to make your family look like a beautiful family.
You already are one.
I’m trying to catch the things you don’t get to see because you’re busy living inside of them.
And the Smocks gave me so much of that.
The chaos. The tenderness. The hands reaching for each other. The ridiculousness that comes with raising boys. The quiet looks between the loud moments.
Nothing manufactured.
Nothing that belongs to anyone else.
Just them.
And years from now, I don’t want these photographs to only show them what everyone looked like.
I want them to remind them exactly what it felt like to belong to each other. 🤍
