Overlooking a wild and windy Delaware Bay from the bluffs of Town Bank, NJ. Originally known as Portsmouth Town and Falmouth, it was founded in 1632 and was the first settlement in New Jersey created exclusively by Long Island and New England whalers. Among these were Joseph Whilden and his wife, Hannah Gorham, a granddaughter of Mayflower pilgrim John Howland. It was reported to have been one of the most successful whaling communities in the New World.
