Missouri, Vanderbilt, and the case of a missing homer:
Friday, May 8 brought me the privilege of covering one of the strangest games of baseball I will likely ever see in my career. Missouri scored 6 runs in the eighth inning to enter the ninth up 7-6. A 2.5-hour rain delay from before the game brought unbelievably thick fog to Taylor Stadium, which would obscure a monstrous hit from the Commodores’ Braden Holcomb. With two outs and runners on first and second, the hit was ruled a ground rule double. One runner would score, and the others would advance to second and third base, bringing the score to 7-7. At 12:08am, the game was suspended due to the conditions, to be resumed at 4pm that afternoon.
4pm came, and Missouri, after striking out the next Vanderbilt batter, failed to prevent the game from entering extra innings. Pitcher Juan Villarreal kept the ‘Dores away from home plate in the 10th, and an opportunity befell the Tigers’ Donovan Jordan. Jordan, who was the closest player to the game-tying ground rule double of the previous night, sealed the comeback with a walk off single, securing an 8-7 win in the bottom of the 10th.
