They called him a wino, but Black people have always known how to recognize spirit when it enters the room.

“The Gospel According to Ned” was inspired by the iconic Good Times episode that challenged what holiness is supposed to look like. In this piece, God is not hanging on a cross. God is a Black woman watching over the room. Present. Regal. Divine.

Cotton blooms anyway. Ancestors linger anyway. The color refuses to whisper.

My signature dots represent the known and unknown ancestors whose lives continue shaping my hands, my vision, and my becoming.

No one tells you how you’re supposed to feel after you build something from nothing and then have to walk away from it.

Pride and grief can sit in the same room.
Honor and doubt can too.
None of it cancels the other out.

You don’t have to sort it all out right now.
Some things aren’t meant to be organized in the moment.
They just need to be felt.

For every single person who crossed that threshold to be seen.
For those who came to celebrate.
For the makeup artists who painted faces to perfection.
For the stylists who created looks that stopped time.
For the Black women whose hands made the space feel like us.
For the contractor who walked into a bare room with me
and helped turn a vision into something real.
