Storms never really end in the mountains… they just move on.

I recently spent the evening over Apple Mountain outside Linden, Virginia watching this system roll across the Blue Ridge. For a while the sky was nothing but electricity, rain, and color — lightning stretching across the ridgeline while the last light of the day fought its way through the storm.

Then eventually it all drifted east, and what was left behind was one of the calmest sunsets I’ve seen in a long time.

That contrast is what stuck with me most about this shoot. Chaos first… silence after.

National Police Week isn’t about headlines, politics, or statistics. It’s about names. Families. Empty seats. Folded flags. The quiet moments before ceremonies begin and the silence after the final note fades away.

Over the years, photography has placed me in the middle of memorials, candlelight vigils, gravesides, and moments most people never see. I’ve watched strong men fight back tears. I’ve watched children hold onto photos of parents they barely got enough time with. And I’ve watched entire communities stop what they were doing to honor those who never made it home.

This week is for them.

For every officer, deputy, trooper, federal agent, correctional officer, and public safety professional who gave everything in service to others… you are not forgotten.

And for the families still carrying that weight every single day, we remember with you.

Still putting the finishing touches on a few things, but most of the photos from the Renegade Dance 2026 Year End Recital are finished and officially uploaded. 📸🔥

There were a lot of moments this weekend, but here’s a few of my personal favorites while everyone starts digging through the gallery.

Who’s ready to see some moments from the Renegade Dance 2026 Year End Recital?

Been buried in edits and there are some seriously fun shots coming out of this weekend’s shows. I should be rolling galleries out later today across email and socials, so keep an eye out. 📸🔥

Before the lights. Before the music.
This is where it starts.

A quiet line of nerves, focus, and everything they’ve worked for… waiting just offstage.

Renegade Dance’s 10th Anniversary shows were something special. Editing is underway with a full gallery coming soon.

Everybody loves to say, “it’s just a couple photos”… right up until they need them done right.

What you don’t always see is everything behind it. The gear that costs more than most expect. The lenses that create the look people are asking for. Lighting, backups, software… and the hours after the shoot making sure it all comes together the way it’s supposed to.

And the biggest piece—time. Not just the hour you see on the schedule. Most “one hour” sessions come with hours of prep, travel, setup, breakdown, and editing on the back end. And beyond that, it’s years of learning how to handle different conditions, different moments, and getting it right when it actually counts.

I understand budgets. I really do. Not every project calls for the same level of investment, and that’s okay. But quality work doesn’t happen by accident, and it doesn’t come without cost.

And this isn’t just photography. It’s any craft. Whether it’s behind a camera, behind a musical performance, or anything else someone has poured years into—there’s time, discipline, and pride in that work.

Respect the craft. Respect the person behind it. And respect what goes into the final product.

I’m excited to share that I’ve been accepted into The People’s Artist, presented by Johnny Depp.

This is a nationwide competition celebrating artists across all mediums, with the chance to be featured in Artforum and showcase work in Los Angeles—all while supporting The Art of Elysium and the impact art can have on people’s lives.

Voting officially opens May 4th, and I’d appreciate your support when the time comes.

If you want to follow along or cast a vote, you can find my profile here:
https://peoplesartist.org/kenneth-hiner-WM8J

Let’s see where this goes.

One exceptional artist will win $25,000, appear in Artforum Magazine, and display their artwork at The Art of Elysium's Salon.

A quick turn across state lines today.

After seeing some of my recent work, I received a call from the DeSoto County District Attorney's Office asking if I could help document their “State of the County” address in Olive Branch. Same mission, different room—capture what matters and stay out of the way.

District Attorney Matthew Barton laid out where things stand across DeSoto County—crime trends, case outcomes, and the ongoing push to keep the county moving in the right direction. What stood out wasn’t just the numbers, but the consistency in the message: partnerships are doing the heavy lifting. Law enforcement, prosecutors, and community leadership all pulling in the same direction.

You could feel that in the room. Business leaders, agency heads, local officials—no noise, just people paying attention to the work being done and where it’s headed next.

Assignments like this are a reminder that not every important story happens under flashing lights. Some of it happens in rooms like this—measured, intentional, and focused on what comes next.

This one was part of the ongoing work that I choose to do pro bono — supporting the people and agencies doing it right. Grateful to have been trusted to document it.

St. Patrick's Cathedral rises behind the Atlas statue along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The Gothic cathedral, completed in 1878, remains one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, framed here against the surrounding modern skyline.

In the foreground, Atlas—installed in 1937—stands as a contrasting figure, set against the vertical lines and detail of the cathedral’s façade.

A single frame, but a layered look at New York’s mix of history, architecture, and symbolism.
