Last night was a snapshot of Memphis in the present moment

Tiger fans filled out Beale Street for “Memphis Madness presents Ballin’ on Beale” as the University of Memphis introduced the new men’s and women’s basketball teams.

At the same time, National Guard troops and members of the Memphis Safe Task Force could be seen along the periphery looking on throughout the festivities.

Dale Sanders, 90, is aiming to reclaim his title of the oldest person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail when he starts his trek on September 6.

Sanders, who previously held the record at 82 in 2017 before losing it to 83-year-old hiker M.J. “Sunny” Eberhart in 2021

Sanders’ home in Bartlett, Tenn., is home to the “Paddler’s Wall of Fame,” pictured second, a staircase from his living room to his basement that is filled with signatures from paddlers and racers who have stayed with Dale while carrying out or planning their own adventures.

Sanders frequently trains in Shelby Forest and hikes there for 10-14 miles, three days a week to prepare for the AT.

One early morning, and I joined him as we battled a seemingly endless swarm of mosquitoes while hearing Sanders’ thoughts flow between advice on battling loneliness on the trail to where on the AT would be a good spot for a drone shot.

“I can’t crawl to the finish line, so that would take me out,” Sanders said while speaking with Jack and I in his Bartlett home. Then after a brief pause. “Let me go back to that,” he said. “If I’m a couple miles out, I’m going to crawl to the finish line.”
