Life Lately: Doom Scrolling

Depression. It comes and goes in waves. There are times that I feel that I’m fully passed it and thriving in my life, and there are other times, like current times, where it feels like it’s consuming me.

My current go-to move when the feelings hit? Couch rot and doom scroll under a cozy blanket. Then what happens? Read too many articles about current events and now I’m even more depressed. Get up and go to the gym? No. Make a homemade dinner? Clean the house? No.

Doom scroll? Yes.

Life Lately: Getting the Perfect Shot

In January, I made myself a goal that I would do one self portrait every month of 2025. I was doing really well until May of this year when we got some unfortunate and wildly unexpected news about my father’s health. My world stopped moving. I stopped creating. I started hiding.

These self portrait shoots are supposed to give me a creative outlet, but I’m such a perfectionist with them that I just can’t bring myself to find and execute an idea. This shoot was supposed to be completely different, but mid shoot my backdrop got yanked down by my cat, my dress doesn’t fit right anymore because me and my depression have gained weight, and I was feeling hot and overstimulated.

Instead of throwing in the towel like I normally would, I pushed through it and took a few shots of my mood in that exact moment. I kind of like how it turned out. It’s NOT perfect, and my editing skills are rusty, but it was an accurate depiction of me in my current state.
