On very, very rare occasions, I still take photos for family and friends who are basically family.
James and Helen have been quietly and powerfully there for me over the past five years. A lucky mentor connection has become one of the most trusted and valued friendships of my life. Helen's loving, pragmatic advice has been life-changing as well. I love them both and love that they have each other.
Their relationship is rich with loyalty, courage, and patience. I felt very strongly about capturing this love. I hope these photos are a light for them like they've each been a light for me.
"I met a stranger in the night
Whose lamp had ceased to shine.
I paused and let him light
His lamp from mine.
A tempest sprang up later on
And shook the world about.
And when the wind was gone
My lamp was out!
But back to me the stranger came—
His lamp was glowing fine!
He held the precious flame
And lighted mine!"
