This lone Coyote has had an injured back-left leg for about 6 months and couldn’t even out-weight on it until I saw him again tonight. He looks remarkably healthy for hunting on 3 legs through the brutal Arizona summer!

It’s not unusual to see a younger Coyote living alone. As they grow, young coyotes often leave their family group to establish their own territory, find a mate, and eventually start a family of their own. During this period of transition, they may spend months living and hunting on their own. Being hurt didn’t help its chances of finding a mate either…

These Javelina (Collard Peccary) were in the grass at the entrance to our neighborhood last night. They were cooling off in the irrigation/grass and helping themselves to the Prickly Pear cactus they regularly visit. We sure love living in our little slice of Jurassic Park next to Arizona’s Tonto National Forest!

On the side of Usery Mountain in East Mesa lies the Phoenix Arrow, a 1,000 foot navigational marker that would stand as tall as the Eiffel Tower if flipped vertically.

Long before GPS existed, a pilot and a crew of teenage Air Explorer Scouts spent five and a half years clearing desert brush and hauling heavy boulders to construct the giant landmark, which was completed in 1956. They painted the one-hundred-foot-tall letters and its prominent western-pointing arrow to help early pilots find the airfield located twenty-two miles away. While local scout troops still volunteer to repaint the stones every decade to preserve this unique piece of Arizona aviation history, the sign sits directly above an active shooting range, meaning hiking up to the letters is strictly prohibited.

Yesterday, I had 2 calls from neighbors to help them relocate Gopher Snakes from their yards. One was even curled up in a dog crate.

Snake activity in central Arizona has been really low for the last month or so until the recent temperature drop. They don’t do much moving when the temps are 110° and above.

Nature’s sanitation crew doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. 🖤

Black Vultures are fascinating and relatively uncommon sights in the United States and most of Arizona. Unlike the more familiar Turkey Vulture, Black Vultures are highly social and often gather in large communal roosts along the Lower Salt River.

Arizona is actually one of the few places in the western United States where Black Vultures occur regularly. These incredible scavengers play an important role as nature’s cleanup crew, consuming carrion and helping remove potential sources of disease from the ecosystem.

I was surprised I spotted this Great Horned Owl yesterday from the middle of the Lower Salt River. Shortly after the Owl, we had a River Otter come up to the kayak as well! Both some fun finds that I certainly don’t have on every paddle in our Arizona gem less than 10 miles from my home.
