This very pregnant and very large Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was on my neighbor’s patio. I regularly hear Gopher Snakes here in Arizona take big, deep breaths like this, but can’t remember hearing a Rattler do it like her.

Did you know Rattlesnakes give birth to live miniature versions of themselves that are even equipped with venom?! It is, however, a myth that the babies are more dangerous/deadly. Adult Rattlesnakes are generally more dangerous because they have much larger venom glands and can deliver far more venom, even though any baby Rattlesnake bite is still medically serious.

This Great Horned Owl was eyeing a neighborhood dog on his sunset walk from a saguaro cactus. They’ve been known to take much larger prey, but it would be extremely rare to take anything larger than the infinite rabbits the Phoenix suburbs provide.

This Anna’s Hummingbird was hovering to feed on the nectar of my aloe flowers. Arizona is one of the best hummingbird states in the U.S. At least 17 species can be found in Arizona. Many are migrants, but Anna’s Hummingbirds are permanent year-round residents!

I knew it was going to be a really good “Wild Horse Day” when they were all around me (and in the parking lot) when I put in the Lower Salt River yesterday. I definitely saw more than 50 Arizona Wild Horses on my early morning paddle! That may be the most I’ve ever seen on an early morning float.

This large band of Wild Horses was stretched across the entire Lower Salt River this morning. What few of us that were fortunate enough to get one river at sunrise were treated to quite the show from the feisty aquatic equine. The river was blocked to us humans for about 5 minutes!🤙🏼

These 2 Red-tailed Hawks appeared to be playing with each other in the hot Arizona morning sun. They took turns taking off and landing on this mountain peak, all while buzzing each other from the air!

Bald Eagle Taking A Swim! This was one experience I probably will never have again. (At least never again in Arizona.)

This Arizona Bald Eagle grabbed more than she could fly away with, and was too stubborn to let the Carp go. After diving into the water and catching the carp, she made the decision to swim down the river with the large Carp fighting in her talons.

I was on the bank over the river trying to follow her with my camera lens while trying to keep up with the speed of Arizona’s Lower Salt River.

Roadrunners are some prehistoric-looking creatures! They eat almost everything, including rattlesnakes, scorpions, lizards, tarantulas, mice, birds, and even hummingbirds when they can catch them. Roadrunners can run about 15–20 mph, and they usually prefer sprinting over flying.

They have some cool survival tactics. They can reabsorb water from their waste, helping them live in brutal dry heat. At night, they can drop into a low-energy state, then sunbathe in the morning with dark skin patches exposed to warm up fast.

These triplet Mule Deer babies were foraging for food in our drought-stricken Sonoran Desert. Only about 25%–40% make it through their first year. Coyotes, mountain lions, and even bobcats are the biggest predator threats to fawns in Arizona. If they’ve made it to be this big, they’ve survived their most vulnerable stage.
