Ice Cube said NBA players regularly discussed the BIG3 during the league’s early years, but later stopped mentioning it during broadcasts. The BIG3 co-founder claimed an unnamed contact told him players had been instructed not to say the league’s name on air, which he described as an example of gatekeeping across industries.

Recalling the change in coverage, Ice Cube said:

“The guys in the NBA used to talk about the BIG3. Go back to year one, all the time. Then they just stopped.”

Ice Cube said he asked one of his contacts why the league was no longer being mentioned:

“So I asked my guy, ‘What happened, man? Why’d y’all stop?’ He said, ‘They told us we couldn’t mention the BIG3 anymore on air.’”

He said the experience reflected a broader problem beyond basketball:

“That’s the b***s**t I’m talking about. I’m talking about what happened to me, but it obviously happens everywhere, to all of us.”
