Birth - no matter how we plan for it, no matter how we prepare, how much we read, how much we exercise, eat right, watch all the videos and listen to all the podcasts - it is, and always will be, unpredictable.

Birth is gonna birth.

The thing is...*so* much of that preparation *should* be learning how to advocate for yourself and your needs, regardless of how that birth actually happens. Leaning into the unpredictability, the unknowns, the "what-ifs" because at the end of the day, even though we can't control the events that are happening, you *do* still have options and a voice, and it's *so* important that you use that voice, and stand up for yourself.

Time and time again, I'm blown away by the strength and mental fortitude of my clients in the face of tough situations and tough decisions. It gives me goosebumps even now thinking about how they use their voices to advocate, ask questions, and collaborate with their providers to make sure their needs are met as much as humanly possible in sometimes tense and scary situations.

After some changes in the plan, this mama opted for a repeat c-section, knowing herself, and her wishes to avoid certain other interventions, and she fully embraced the experience, and advocated *hard* to make sure I was able to be in the OR with her to help document and support her along the way.

She didn't back down, she communicated her needs clearly and strongly, and...her providers listened.

I was invited into the OR for the first time in my career as a doula and birth photographer, and that in and of itself was enough to make me tear up, but the absolute honor it was to be able to witness her birth first hand, to be able to stand next to her and tell her "congratulations" when her baby was born, to be that consistent support for her during the surgery, and to able to provide the photos of this transformational moment in her life for her and her family? Priceless.

Have I mentioned I'm monumentally bad at marketing/regular posting to keep my page in front of the masses? Well, I most definitely am.

I'm also trying to find a balance between life, work, and keeping this photography *thing* something that continues to fill my cup and doesn't become a stressful means to an end. It was getting to that point, and was one of the reasons I stepped back a bit from the social media aspect of things. Sometimes it feels like too large a mountain to climb - all the posting "requirements" to stay relevant, to get your name out there and your business seen by potential clients, to keep them interacting on your posts so you don't become just another business that failed to keep up with the times. Not to mention the constant battle to connect with potential clients and *convince* them that you're worth the costs involved in hiring a professional photographer, when there's handfuls of new photographers popping up left and right offering free sessions, or $50 sessions with "all photos included." *That* feeling just pulled me back to high school and felt like a giant popularity battle, and wasn't (isn't?) something I'm interested in investing my time and energy in.

So, here I am, and the question is...what now?

Am I still a birth photographer and doula? Absolutely. And I have openings for both support and documentation and would be *thrilled* if you or your friend reached out to me to chat to see if I'd be a good fit.

Do I still offer other sessions? Family, newborn, maternity, bereavement, and other milestone events? Absolutely. And I'd love to document your special moments for you this year!

Am I hoping that my name continues to pop up in conversation and recommendations when it comes to birth support and photography? I absolutely *do* and will be making more of an effort to post regularly (listen, it's going in my planner this time, and on my Finch app (hello ADHD and dopamine) so I'm crossing my fingers I can ease back into being *seen* and continue to spread my art, and my heart along the way.

In the meantime, here are some photos I took just for fun - just for me, at a recent cup-filling get-together with some old, and new friends this past weekend.

I think we've had a long enough cold snap, don't you?

Sometimes when the days are short and the cold is...*seemingly* never-ending, I'll scroll through galleries to remind myself that everything has a season, and this is just *right now,* not forever. That can apply to a *lot* of things going on right now. So if you're like me and need a little reminder of brighter days, take a peek at this beautiful couple, take some grounding breaths, and then get back to making good trouble.

This windy cold day today is taking me back to an absolutely *freezing* session last winter.

When I say I have the best clients, I really mean it. This entire family were amazingly good sports and with plenty of time in the car with the heat blasting to warm up in between, we managed to make some magic.
