In other news, the truck is mostly packed and Top to Bonham Photography is nearly ready for Saturday’s Ocean County Irish Festival! ☘️📸

2022 Ocean County Irish Festival

I won’t name the print studio because this isn’t a call-out post, but I can’t hide how frustrating this is. I was beyond excited to finally print several photographs from my recent journey chasing Union Pacific Railroad 4014. These images needed to be seen large, and I planned for this metal triptych to become a featured piece at my upcoming art festivals. After what felt like weeks of anticipation, the shipment finally arrived and I opened the box to find the panels bent and folded along the edges.

I can’t begin to describe the disappointment. My photographs, my integrity, and the Top to Bonham Photography name are represented by every piece I place in my booth. I cannot sell work in this condition, and I won’t. No matter how much time or money I invest, my customers deserve artwork I am proud to put my name behind. I’ve contacted the studio and hope we can resolve the situation quickly. For now, this is one of those difficult behind-the-scenes moments that comes with preparing for an art show, one most people never get to see.

Steamtown’s Railfest 2026 was an incredible weekend! I had the awesome opportunity to attend the after-dark photography session, but the daytime activities were every bit as memorable. There was so much history to explore, incredible model railroad displays, an open workshop, and admittedly I had way too much fun with the scavenger hunt. And did I mention the trains? Here’s a collection of images from an great weekend at Steamtown National Historic Site.

Steamtown After Dark is officially live on the website!

What an unforgettable night. Huge thanks again to the Iron Horse Society, Steamtown National Historic Site, the volunteers, reenactors, crews, and everyone who helped make this photo session possible. After spending so much time chasing 4014 this summer, I kept wondering: How do you top those photographs? This night gave me a pretty good answer. Bring together steam, steel, history, and dramatic light. Night photography like this was definitely a challenge, but I’m incredibly happy with what we came away with. I’d jump at the opportunity to do something like this again.

Huge thank you to Iron Horse Society & Steamtown National Historic Site for putting together such an incredible night photography session last night. I came away with some frames I’m really excited about, and I’m looking forward to giving them the attention they deserve once I’m back in the studio. For now, I’m still camping off-grid, so the edits are a work in progress. Can’t wait to refine the final images and share more from the night with everyone. What an awesome experience!

Edits of this image will include minor removal of power lines to keep the flow of the image, rather then have your eyes follow the power lines. Yet keep the integrity of the rail yard and keep the scene convincing rather than a “stage.” Most likely a slight highlight on troops. Color correct smoke. Linear gradient to reduce foreground.

It’s hard to believe how much time has already passed since the 4014 adventure. I’ve cataloged the photos on my computer, but the Lightroom organization is another story. After weeks of editing, exporting, re-editing and working through thousands of images, I’ve somehow managed to create files just about everywhere. 😂 There’s still plenty of cleanup left to do. But with an anticipated weekend at Steamtown for Railfest coming up, it’s time to shift gears finish clearing the camera cards, charge the batteries and start with a fresh slate.

I’m especially excited to say I’ll be taking part in one of the Iron Horse Society limited After Dark at the Park night photography sessions. Saturday night brings together steam, armor and railroad history, including Baldwin No. 26 and Big Boy No. 4012 under the lights. After spending so much of the summer Chasing Steam and Capturing History,I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the next chapter.
