Even though it’s a wild time out there, I want to share something that’s been bringing me joy over the last couple of months — creating my new branding and new online home for my work!

My previous branding, while beautifully done (by a talented professional designer) no longer was a fit for my expanded services and direction.

My new branding feels like a fresh digital home, and while the website still needs some tweaking, I didn’t want to wait any longer to share.

The industries and businesses I want to work with (or continue working with) include:
• Architecture + Interiors
• Hospitality / Food + Bev
• Lifestyle Brands
• Agriculture + Growers
• Water-Use Advocacy + Clean Energy
• Industrial/Manufacturing

We all love props! Ever wonder how many you need for a brand photo session? Or what type of things to have for brand photos? 🙌
Here's my advice:
1️⃣
Show your process and tools: Do you work with clients virtually or in person? If virtually, a laptop, tablet, or phone is a great prop. If you work with clients in person or you're a maker, make sure to have whatever products/items you make, tools you use to do your job, or people you work with.
2️⃣
Show a day in your life: Include some of those items you can’t live without, and your brand photos will have a larger range of variety and help tell your story! Think journal, smoothies, yoga mat, crystals, whatever energizes and inspires you.
3️⃣
Show your personality: Let who YOU are shine through in your photos - what’s your favorite drink, hobby, free-time activity, or your pet you can include in photos? People crave connection and want to see similarity in others, so give them something to relate to.

What do I do for a brand session, besides get new headshots?

Great question! I love this question because it’s what sets your session apart from just having a regular ol’ headshot session with a portrait or similar type of photographer.

First, we have a Planning Call beforehand to talk about options, and narrow down to ideas that work for YOUR business and brand. But typically, one of my top recommendations during our planning process is highlighting *behind the scenes* moments during your brand session!

This usually looks like: You in action, doing what you do best!

For service-based businesses, that often means working with your hands, working with your clients in-person or virtually, or moments of your daily routine and how you fuel yourself (think your personal wellness, your family, your pets, your hobbies, etc.).

For product-based businesses, it can mean taking us through the creative process, showing us materials/ingredients in your products, how you package/ship/deliver your products, as well as moments of your daily/personal routine like those listed above.

How about you, do you have some behind the scenes ideas, daily routine moments, or similar images you want to share with your audience? I bet what seems mundane or routine to you is interesting to your ideal audience, and they’d love to see those snapshots of your business and life!

(To be super clear, there’s nothing wrong with getting headshots done by a studio or portrait photographer! That type of session is simply focused on headshots only, not telling the story of your business/brand and focusing on photos that are going to be helpful for your connection-based or story-telling marketing. And usually it’s that element of connection and realness that can be so much more impactful for your brand as a whole.)

Did you know that I consider your furry friend to be a prop? As in, you can bring them to your session if they’re part of your life and your personal brand!

Two quick tips on incorporating them into your photos:

1️⃣ Make sure to have someone available to help with them, take them out for their business, and take them home when they’re finished on location for your photos. This ensures you can keep on moving and we don’t lose momentum at your session! (Or as we did in this session, you can take the photos right at your own home so that they're comfortable)
2️⃣ Plan in extra buffer time, they can sometimes be a little camera shy or excited, so it can take a few minutes to warm up to me or the camera. When in doubt, give yourself an extra 15 minutes or so, so we’re not rushed for the photos that they’re in with you.

I absolutely love pets, so if you want to include them in your session, my answer is always YES! We just need to plan accordingly to make sure their time on camera is a success.

Is brand photography for professional service providers like accountants, financial coaches, attorneys, consultants, real estate agents, and even copywriters?

Well let’s ask this question — Do you market your business online on a website, social media, email list, ads, or in print like ads, magazines, chamber or commerce materials, etc?

If you market yourself in ANY of the ways above, then the answer is yes! Part of your marketing is copy/text, but almost always, you pair it with images (or in some cases video)!

And chances are, you already are maxed out on your time and workload, you always need more hours in the day. So why also try to take your own photos for marketing your business?
🎉
You can outsource that task by hiring a brand/commercial photographer! Not only does is level up your company and come across as elevated and professional in your messaging, but it also saves you a boatload of your most valuable resource — TIME.

I’m a business strategist FIRST and artist/photographer SECOND. (This should be my new tagline, I've said it so many times on potential client calls recently.)

Really. It comes down to the strategy and planning behind the photography and the image-making because truly, many people can (and do) execute the technical job of taking a photo.

Yes, that's probably super odd to hear from a photographer and an artist, but it's true! There are many photographers and artists out there, but I'm the right fit for people who want to also strategize with me, dream with me, and then together create an amazing plan for your images before we even take a single photo.

My job is to help YOU make more money, market yourself organically, and achieve your dream life + goals. We do that by putting strategy first and artistic creativity second.
