Milwaukee's Hoan Bridge

This iconic bridge is named after Daniel Hoan, Milwaukee’s longest-serving mayor (1916–1940). It’s a "tied-arch" bridge, designed to span the mouth of the Milwaukee River and the inner harbor. It was famously dubbed the "Bridge to Nowhere" for years because it didn't connect to any major freeways until the late 90s.

The "Light the Hoan" project, launched in 2018, turned the bridge into a multi-light painted canvas for the city, celebrating everything from local causes to our home sports teams.

Holy Hill
Hubertus, WI

Holy Hill - Basilica and National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians is a prominent religious and historic site located in Hubertus, Wisconsin, known for its striking neo-Romanesque architecture and scenic hilltop setting.

The basilica, constructed in 1926, features distinct, soaring twin towers. It sits atop one of the highest points in the region, offering expansive views of the surrounding kettle moraine landscape, which is particularly popular to visit during the autumn season.

Since 1906, the site has been under the care of the Discalced Carmelite Friars. The site operates as a "minor basilica," a title granted by the Pope that indicates a special bond with the Chair of St. Peter.

The scenic observation tower is one of the main draws, offering expansive views of the Kettle Moraine landscape. There is a gift shop and a small café on-site, though it is a good idea to check for their specific operating hours ahead of time, as they are not always available.

This is the historic Wisconsin Gas Building (626 E. Wisconsin Ave), an Art Deco classic built in 1930. The real star of the show here is the massive 21-foot Weather Flame perched on the roof. Added in 1956, this four-ton beacon changes color to give locals a quick weather forecast.
