I finally had a chance to get out and shoot after several days of wildfire smoke. While these photos of Holy Hill weren't taken at the peak, they still capture the surreal haze that blanketed much of the state.

Thursday may have been the worst of it here, when a monitoring site in the Milwaukee area recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 644. To put that in perspective, anything over 300 is considered "Hazardous" by the EPA. That's an incredible number.

From what I could find, this wasn't just one of Wisconsin's worst air quality events on record—it appears to rank among the most severe modern air pollution events ever measured in the United States, with parts of the Midwest recording some of the worst air quality anywhere in the world that day.

The smoke originated from hundreds of wildfires burning across southern Canada and parts of northern Minnesota. My thoughts are with the communities closest to those fires, who are dealing with impacts far beyond the haze we experienced here.

It's amazing how something so destructive can also create such an unforgettable atmosphere. Here are a couple views of Holy Hill through the smoke.

Not every shot from Iceland came from the big camera.

This one was taken with my iPhone 15 outside the Herring Era Museum in Siglufjörður— the instant HDR that a phone provides as well as the simplicity of the wide angle lens made it easy for the camera to to stay in the bag for this shot.

The museum tells the story of the herring boom that helped transform Iceland in the 20th century. At its height, thousands of people came here to work, and herring—known as the “silver of the sea”—helped carry Iceland from poverty toward prosperity. 

I had the phone in my pocket, the water was perfectly still, and for a few seconds everything lined up. Not bad for an iPhone shot.

I’m back! While I don’t have a ton of “calendar-quality” shots to share—Iceland was a school trip, not a photography expedition—I still lugged all my equipment around just in case an opportunity presented itself.

Lucky for me, our hotel in Dalvík was just a short walk from several properties with Icelandic horses.

The Icelandic horse is something special. Small but incredibly strong, more than 1,000 years of isolation have shaped a horse with a toughness and character that feel perfectly at home in this wild landscape. Strict laws have helped preserve the breed for centuries—horses cannot be imported into Iceland, and once an Icelandic horse leaves the country, it can never return. That isolation has helped keep the breed remarkably pure and largely unchanged for generations.

This has been a crazy June so far. It started with the state track championship, where our boys finished runner-up and the girls completed a three-peat. All told, that makes eight state trophies since 2020. The next weekend, we hosted the Freshman state championship meet, followed by a trip to Oregon for the Nike Outdoor National Championship.

This is a shot I took of Proxy Falls, which was followed by a sprint to the airport with a couple of wet feet.

I haven't had time to edit much, nor do I even have a computer with me as I'm currently leading a student group in Iceland. Check my stories for iPhone picture updates if you'd like to see the amazing things we're seeing daily. Next week, I hope to turn the lens back on Wisconsin.
