Engagement sessions almost always start the same way, with a little bit of uncertainty.

Most couples haven’t done this before, and it’s completely normal to feel a little awkward stepping in front of a camera. There’s often a moment of “what do we do with our hands?” or “are we doing this right?”

But something really beautiful happens when you give it a little time.

The nerves settle. You stop thinking so much about being photographed and start paying attention to each other instead. The way you naturally connect takes over, and that’s where the real moments live.

By the end, it rarely feels like a photoshoot anymore. It just feels like you.

Kas and Dylan’s wedding day felt like more than just a celebration, it felt like a continuation.

Over the past two years, we've had the privilege of documenting their family in different seasons, and this one might be the most meaningful yet. Standing with them as they stepped into marriage, while also preparing to welcome a new life, was something we don’t take lightly.

There’s something really special about getting to photograph people over time. You begin to see the layers, the way they support each other, the quiet moments, the in-between pieces that make up a life together.

One of our favorite parts of any engagement session is everything that happens in between the “official” moments. The laughter, the inside jokes, the way people naturally settle into each other when they forget the camera is there.

This behind-the-scenes snapshot was taken during an engagement session at Leach Botanical Gardens here in Portland, Oregon. It’s such a peaceful, tucked-away space, perfect for slowing down and letting real moments unfold.

We’re also photographing their wedding, which makes sessions like this even more meaningful. Getting to know our couples ahead of time always adds another layer of trust and comfort, and it shows in every frame.

Some weddings feel like a celebration of something brand new. Others feel like stepping into a story that’s already been unfolding for years.

We wandered through the moss-covered forests of the Pacific Northwest, letting the afternoon unfold naturally. No rush. No pressure. Just conversation, laughter, and the kind of moments that happen when two people feel completely at ease together.
