When photographing older or medically fragile dogs, I adjust posing and angles to prioritize comfort and familiarity first, then build images around what they naturally offer in the moment.

Artemis, a 13-year-old Chihuahua mix who was recently diagnosed with inoperable cancer. On top of that, the sweet girl was also dealing with partial facial atrophy on the right side of her face.

To capture her likeness and highlight her as the dog her family knows and loves (instead of highlighting the disease) I captured her from her left side, keeping movement minimal, and letting family interaction lead the structure of the images.

This is just one way I tailor sessions to my subjects because even though I photograph all dogs, my approach changes with each pup.

Client words > my words.

“For Christmas, my husband surprised me with a photo shoot for my pugs and me. Hands down one of the best unexpected experiences with my two four-legged family members — I highly recommend this studio.

On paper, this sounded like so much fun… but I definitely had a moment where a flood of logistics questions hit me. Bre basically predicted every single one. She has truly thought through every part of the experience, both before and after the session.

We had a March shoot, and beforehand she sent a couple of check-in emails about what to expect and asked to learn more about the dogs. On the day of the session, she welcomed us with the biggest smile and immediately let the dogs roam freely around the studio.

A note for the humans: I thought a 45+ minute session would feel quick. In reality, she timed it perfectly. Almost to the minute, the first pug faded… then me… then the second pug. It takes real concentration from both dogs and humans, and Bre has already accounted for that. She knows which poses to start with, uses noise-makers in a strategic order, and by the end of the session you truly have the winning shots.

After the session, Bre clearly explained the proofing process and initially selects and edits a few favorites while giving you the option to swap images if needed.”

Getting reviews like this never gets old.
