"Should I bring treats?"

I get this question all the time and my answer is always a resounding, yes! Please do!

Your dog doesn't need to know a dozen commands or sit perfectly still for a great portrait session. They just need a reason to stay engaged. A few really good treats can turn a distracted dog into one that's excited to work with us for a few minutes at a time.

If your dog has food allergies or a sensitive stomach, that's never a problem. Just let me know ahead of time, or bring their favorite safe treats, and we'll work with what motivates them best.

The session should be fun for your dog—not something they have to endure. And T-R-E-A-T-S make everything in life a little more fun... amiright?!

Golden Retrievers have a reputation for being easy to photograph... and honestly, they've earned it.

They're expressive, eager to participate, and usually happy to play whatever weird little games I come up with to get the perfect head tilt. But if you've ever lived with a Golden, you also know they can go from calm and composed to full-speed zoomies in about half a second.

That's part of what I love about photographing them. The challenge isn't convincing them to have fun—it's capturing the sweet, soulful side that's tucked in between all that enthusiasm.

Golden people, I have to know: what's the most stereotypically Golden thing your dog does?

Bastian the Giant Schnauzer came in with full energy and a very clear agenda: show off, get treat, repeat.

He was in his element once he had the time to explore a new space with a lot of new smells. I could tell his interest shifted the second his favorite ball came out of mom's bag.

And honestly, he never missed. Every single catch landed like he’d been waiting all day to prove a point.

I didn’t really need to direct much at all. Just gave him space to do what he already does well and timed the moments in between.

Plus blowing some dog-friendly meat-flavored bubbles never hurts!

I met my first fluffy Frenchie!

and brought their Frenchie mix, Drama, in for a portrait session back in 2022.

This time was Miss Teddy's turn!

Between her head tilts, silly expressions, big smile, and gentle energy, I fell in love immediately!

Last photo: I make the same face when laughing at my own jokes...

Some dogs politely pose for photos.

Some dogs discover dog-safe bacon-flavored bubbles and immediately forget every life skill they've ever learned.

Pugs Steve and Tony were split. Tony didn't care about the bubbles.

Steve on the other hand...

Honestly I'd probably have Steve's reaction though if someone made meat-flavored bubbles for humans.

Taz and his human have such a sweet bond.

Every time one of my clients looks up to their human for reassurance, permission, or what feels like they have some awesome inside joke at my expense (I guess I do make some pretty strange noises during sessions....), my heart melts.

When your dog lays down on set, don't get frustrated with them. I find it to be a huge compliment because it means they feel comfortable and relaxed in my studio. That they feel safe and aren't stressed.

Like Orion here. This Irish Setter X Poodle mix starting getting a little tired toward the end of his session and instead of making him do something he didn't feel like, I leaned in and captured his sweet eyes looking up at his dad as if to say, "Dad, I'm tired. Can we go yet?"

"We should probably do photos someday."

The challenge is that dogs don't really care about our timelines.

They just keep getting older while their bodies keep aging.

All while we're busy waiting for the right time.

Sometimes the right time is now. Not waiting for a diagnosis. Or finally having a free weekend.

There doesn't need to be a looming deadline to want to remember this chapter of life exactly as it is right now.

Honestly, that's my favorite reason to do a session.

Not because you're running out of time.

Because you're in a season you'll want to remember.
