Jamie Cooper Photography Landscape, portrait, commercial photographer living in the wonderful driftless region of the midwest based out of La Crosse, WI.

Raised by Coopers and tamed by trees, I live under the influence of men who walked into the wild. Haunted by the allure of swirling water; i am a hunter gatherer of natural light and candid moments. with an appetite whet with a taste of the unknown and the smell of home, i wander a path paved by open minds and trusting eyes, guided by willing feet… …and a desire to bring you with me. From my early

days of trying to steal the camera at family celebrations, to recent trips photographing sunsets in Utah, fly fishing in the Midwest, working with Park Rangers in Arizona, to close friends tying the knot, my pursuit of new experiences pushes me to continually evolve my vision, while reminding me of the importance of carrying my camera with humor, compassion and curiosity.

In the middle of something awful, the only good thing you see is people taking care of each other.

Peaceful protest. Neighbors showing up. Community holding itself together.

This didn’t have to happen. It was preventible.

F**k ICE.

20 years ago, I took my first trip into the Boundary Waters. I didn’t know it then, but that trip would shape a lot of who I’ve become.

This month, I went back. Same entry point, but this time with my brother and my dad. It was my dad’s first time ever in the BWCA.

We weren’t in a rush. We weren’t chasing anything. We just moved through the days slowly, paddling, cooking, casting and listening.

This trip wasn’t about photos. It was about paying attention. Paying attention to the silence, to the stories, and most importantly to the people that you’re sharing a canoe with.

Twenty years in, this place still has a hold on me. And it was a pleasure, with my brother to be able to show my dad a place that we hold so dearly to our hearts.

Somewhere Between Ely and Grand Marais:

We followed the southern edge of the Boundary Waters—an area most know by canoe. But we set out to see it differently. On bikes. With packrafts. Linking together gravel roads, forgotten paths, and stretches of quiet water—never leaving the Superior National Forest.

This wasn’t about getting somewhere fast. It was about reimagining familiar ground. Connecting wild places in new ways, moving slow enough to actually see the land we passed through.

We kept circling back to this idea of what exists between hubs. Between Ely and Grand Marais. Between trail and portage. Between how most people experience this region—and how we chose to.

Northern Minnesota has more to give than most folks ever see. And if you travel light and stay curious, it’ll show you a side that doesn’t come easy.

More to come

I’ve been making an effort to fish with more folks since moving to Minneapolis. Wild how much variety there is within striking distance of the city.

Linked up with the other week for an evening mission in the Driftless—trout were looking up, and a few warm water surprises kept things interesting. Always good to slow down, cast a few, and share water with solid people.

Back in the rhythm of packing dry bags, checking flows, and watching weather windows.

Plenty of time on the water is ahead for this season- shooting, paddling, fishing, and trying to line up a few more good projects.

If you’ve got a favorite stretch of river to canoe from - or a project in mind- I’m all ears.

Who else has some paddle trips on the calendar this summer?

Could go for a couple nights of feeling small in the mountains again. Cool air, big views, everything stripped down to what matters. The kind of reset you don’t know you need until you’re out there—headlamp light, stove humming, nothing but time.

Life doesn’t get much better than calm mornings on the water and canoe coffee.

Spring has spring in the Driftless which means it’s a good time to get lost on a trout stream.
