Kruger National Park is an epic place to spend a few weeks in. I guided a group for there recently during one of my conservation projects. It gave me a chance to test out some new kit Insta360 and capture some great moments with some of the worlds most incredible wildlife.

I was able to bring a group together last year to collar the matriarch of the elephant herd at the Mkuze Valley Wilderness. This was the first elephant to be collared in this area and will help the monitoring unit collect data to help the conservancy manage the elephant herd more effectively.

We watched the helicopter work the herd of elephants along the mountain to try get them into a position where the team could access the darted individual safely. It was a windy day and the air team had a big job to do. We ended up having to work really quickly on the Ele because she went down in an awkward position. From the vets, to the air support, the ground crew and the donors that made this happen, I am all about bringing people together to encourage better management decisions where data and facts are used to manage wildlife.

I’ve just posted a few first person videos of the team and myself trying to slow down a sedated rhino that was being prepped for translocation. Here is the amazing view observes have ad we quietly try to keep her in place while we work to bring her down safely. She has a blind fold and rhino ear muffs to reduce stimulus, keeping her calm. The goal here is to keep everyone and the rhino safe, if she continues to step forward we guide her until she takes up a resting position. It wasn’t without its hiccups which I will talk about in another post but for a team coming together the morning of the operation, I am very proud of the group. This is all made possible by my great supporters.

Up close with conservation. Here we are working on translocating some 🦏 to their new home.

I’m often asked to describe my work. I have spent a lot of time working with rhino as boots on the ground. Supporting areas of habitat that protect rhino has always been the goal. However, bringing people together from different parts of the conservation world to work on the problems that areas with rhino face has become a huge part of that task, and I am good at it. Everything you see in this operation clip is prepped a year in advance with many people playing their parts to find funding for the operation, to prepare permits for translocations, organise transport professionals, helicopters, veterinary support, finding rhino to move and create a package that mobilises people to get involved in and learn about wildlife management.

I’ve been moving rhino recently in a project designed to help renew an aging population with new genetics. This project will secure the next 50 years of rhino conservation for this area. When we get together and dream these projects up it seems impossible but what I have learned is anything can happen when you have the right people around you. You know who you are.
