There comes a time when you have to stop waiting for permission to become the woman you already know you are.

Not louder. Not harder. Not someone else’s version of powerful.

Your version.

The woman who trusts herself.
Who makes decisions without constantly second-guessing them.
Who stops shrinking to fit spaces she has already outgrown.
Who knows what she wants and is willing to create a life that reflects it.

Stepping into your power isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about finally giving yourself permission to fully occupy your own life.

Pay attention to what keeps calling you back.

The art you can stand in front of forever. The books you underline until the pages are full. The films you watch again and again. The places that make you feel something. The people whose lives or work make you think, there’s something there for me.

I don’t think those attractions are always random.

Sometimes we recognize ourselves in things long before we have the language to explain why.

Our taste becomes a collection of clues.

And maybe part of knowing yourself is learning to follow them. To notice the patterns. To ask what it is about this photograph, this story, this place, this person that feels so familiar.

The things that inspire you may be reflecting pieces of yourself you haven’t fully met yet.

And that makes paying attention to what you love a very interesting way of finding your way back to yourself.

Romanticizing my little corner of the world. 🤎

I’ve always loved creating a home that feels good to come back to. Soft bedding, beautiful textures, plants, familiar fragrances, and pieces I’ve collected simply because I love them.

My bed has always been described as inviting and cozy. Exactly how I want it.

The white bedspread is said to have once belonged to my granny. Just one of those special pieces that makes my home feel personal.

I may not love where my home is, but I genuinely love the home I’ve created within these walls.

And until I’m somewhere else, I’ll keep making this space beautiful.

Because I don’t believe we have to wait for our dream location to enjoy the life we’re living right now.

There comes a point when becoming isn’t about adding more to yourself.

It’s about removing.

The expectations.
The roles you were handed.
The versions of yourself created to make other people comfortable.
The ideas about who you should be.

And somewhere underneath all of that is the person who was there all along.

Maybe that’s what becoming really is. Not reinventing yourself, but slowly finding your way back to yourself.

What a privilege it is to finally meet the person you were always meant to be.

Some versions of me were never meant to be permanent.

They were created for a reason. To protect me. To get me through something. To keep the peace. To carry responsibilities that needed carrying. To survive circumstances I didn’t yet know how to navigate any other way.

And I’m grateful for them.

But survival skills can become cages when we keep living inside them long after the danger has passed.

I don’t have to keep being the strong one.
The quiet one.
The one who overthinks everything.
The one who keeps everyone else comfortable.
The one who carries it all.

I can thank those versions of myself for getting me here without asking them to come with me.

Somewhere underneath all the armor is simply me.

And she gets to live now.

I think I'm about 14 years old here, sitting at my mom's sewing machine in my bedroom.

I have absolutely no idea what I was making.

But judging by my face, apparently it was serious business. 😂

This picture makes me smile for so many reasons.

First, the room.

My mom chose that wallpaper. One day I came home from school and she had completely transformed my bedroom. New bedding. A new wicker desk and chair. Everything fresh. I was a little obsessed with yellow at the time, so naturally that became part of the room too.

What I understand now is that my mom was giving me something I wouldn't have known how to name at 14.

She gave me a clean palette and let my imagination take it from there.

I was always making something.

Sewing. Drawing. Experimenting. Changing things. Figuring out how things worked and then deciding how I wanted them to work instead.

This was also shortly after I chopped off my hair for the first time. What you can't see is the long tail I left in the back. I'd braid it and add ribbon because I loved Adam Ant.

Because apparently committing to a haircut wasn't enough. It needed art direction. 😂

When I look at old photographs like this now, I'm beginning to recognize patterns I couldn't have seen while I was living them.

Creativity wasn't something I discovered later in life.

It was already there.

There was no career plan attached to it. I wasn't sitting at that sewing machine thinking about becoming an artist, photographer, creative director or entrepreneur.

I was just a kid who needed to make things.

And I had a mother who kept giving me room to do it.

I don't know what happened to whatever I was creating that day.

But the girl creating it?

She's still here.

We had company.

While exploring the desert outside Dubai, I came across these gazelles and this one stopped long enough to look directly at me. Naturally, I took the picture.

I love that moment of recognition that sometimes happens when photographing animals. I'm watching them, they're clearly watching me, and for a few seconds we're both just standing there trying to figure out what the other is doing.

I also like that I didn't isolate this one completely from its surroundings. You can see another gazelle behind it, part of one entering the frame, the scrub growing in the sand, even the feeding structures. It isn't a wildlife portrait pretending I wasn't there. It's a record of what I actually encountered.

And that little face looking straight into my camera is still my favorite part.

We spend so much time thinking about what we could do if we had more time, more money, more resources, more experience, or the perfect opportunity.

Meanwhile, there’s something we can do right now.

Use what you know.
Use what you have.
Use the gifts you’ve already been given.
Make something. Learn something. Begin something.

It doesn’t have to be the finished version. It doesn’t even have to be your best work yet.

Just don’t overlook the possibilities of this present moment while waiting for everything else to fall into place.

Sometimes what you have today is more than enough to begin.

I had to photograph the dashboard.

We were riding through the Dubai desert in these vintage Land Rovers, and while the dunes were obviously getting plenty of attention from my camera, I kept noticing the vehicle itself.

The worn gauges. The faded blue paint. Rust around the edges. That old Chevron keychain still hanging from the ignition. Nothing polished or restored to perfection. It looked like a vehicle that had actually lived a life.

I love details like this when I travel because they become part of the memory of the experience. Years later, I don't just remember riding through the desert. I remember what I was riding in.

And apparently I needed photographic evidence of the dashboard too. 😂
