Golden hour has a way of turning ordinary moments into something worth stopping for.

Late evening sun was pouring across these water lilies just right, catching every petal in gold, while the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory shimmered in reflection across the greenhouse glass behind them. It was one of those views that stops you mid-step — I couldn't walk past it.

The sky was putting on its own show. ⚡

While crossing the Mississippi River on the Stone Arch Bridge, I caught a storm brewing in the distance. The clouds were alive with in-cloud lightning, flickering and glowing without a single visible bolt. I stood there for a while just watching them light up again and again, trying to time this shot to catch it.

Down below, the 35W Bridge was lit up in purple, with the Eleven on the River Tower glowing gold beside it. And honestly? If there's purple lighting involved, I'm photographing it. No exceptions.

Golden hour doesn't wait for anyone.

I'd just arrived at this sunflower field, the sun sinking fast, when I spotted this one flower standing tall above the rest. Perfect shot, closing window.

Right as I got into position, my phone rang. It was my mom calling. I still have both of my parents around, and that's not something I take for granted, so I answered.

Camera in one hand, phone in the other, somehow working the camera settings while catching up with her.

I still don't know how I managed both. But I walked away with this keeper and a good conversation, too.

I was already heading home.

I'd spent the day at Jay Cooke State Park, walking through fog, mist, and rain; the kind of day that photographers either love or curse, depending on how good their photos are.

Then, right as I was about to cross the bridge by the dam, I noticed the break in the clouds.

I pulled over, grabbed my gear, and scrambled down a steep slope of mud and wet rocks. As an old fat guy with a bum knee, that kind of scramble isn't exactly in my wheelhouse.

But capturing a scene like this is.

I made it down to the St. Louis River to catch this view with the Munger State Trail pedestrian bridge spanning the river below.

Hidden Falls has a bit of a secret identity problem: it's not hidden at all. 😄

Tucked into Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, this multi-tiered waterfall spills over layered limestone into a quiet pool, and getting there takes little more than a short, paved walk from the trailhead. No scrambling, no bushwhacking, just a peaceful stroll through golden autumn woods that opens up to this.

I'm honestly glad the name doesn't hold up. A view this good deserves to be easy to find.

Minneapolis sunsets hit a little different.

Arched bridges, glowing green light, the Mississippi carrying it all downstream — and the skyline lit up behind it. Look closely, and you'll even catch the Stone Arch Bridge in the distance.

I shot this from Bridge No. 9, back before the fencing went up. Not sure I'll ever get this exact view again, but I'm going to try.
