Every great wildlife photograph begins long before the shutter is pressed.

It starts with patience.
With searching.
With waiting.

This leopard was the reward for countless moments of observation in Kruger National Park.

The first part of this reel recreates the quiet search behind the camera. The second part shows the moment I was fortunate enough to experience.

Schwarzspecht (Dryocopus martius)

Der Schwarzspecht ist der größte Specht Europas und eine Schlüsselart unserer Wälder.
Mit seinem kräftigen Schnabel kann er selbst hartes Totholz aufbrechen, um an Ameisen und Käferlarven zu gelangen.

Seine Höhlen haben jedoch eine weit größere Bedeutung:
Nachdem der Schwarzspecht sie verlassen hat, werden sie von vielen anderen Arten genutzt – darunter Hohltauben, Fledermäuse, Waldkäuze oder Baummarder.

Damit schafft dieser beeindruckende Vogel Lebensraum für zahlreiche Waldbewohner.

Typisch ist auch sein weithin hörbares Trommeln, das besonders im Frühjahr zur Revierabgrenzung dient.

Ein kurzer Moment am Stamm – bevor er wieder im Wald verschwindet.
