Photography is all about noticing. Of course noticing light, composition, and framing but also noticing one’s own feelings - how I’m stepping into work - what energy am I carrying, how am I holding everything in my world to make the art I want to make. Whether photographing people or not, noticing how I’m showing up in my craft always impacts the quality of work that I produce. Being a photographer brings me closer to myself and my inner truth. Teaching me lessons and helping me grow every day.

Each identity portrait brings a new challenge which is what I love so much about the process. For Raven, the identity portrait process was one of deep self-exploration. Reflecting on her background in acting, performing beauty at the direction of others, her own relationship to play and being seen just as she is. Together we explored how her own reflection served as both a reminder to embrace herself as she is while also providing a reminder to love herself without any need for the physical. She is magnificent without external validation.

On this day we moved, played, experimented, and let ourselves be free - both as a vulnerable subject and as a photographer. The resulting images are stunning.

We all have something to say and an inner world to express. Take the time to honor yourself as the main character in your own life story. To center yourself isn’t selfish, it’s brave and healing. There is so much more to say and to experience. You’ll never regret making it tangible. Let’s work together.

Maggie’s Identity Portraits took my breath away. This woman was so brave and vulnerable. Exploring what her adoption journey has and continues to mean for her. Embracing all the complexities not to be more palatable to others but to choose herself. Through this process her words to herself ring with clarity: “Maybe love was never meant to be secured through your disappearance. maybe it comes when you are most fully here. And maybe, for the first time, it doesn’t feel like something you have to earn or hold together, but something you can finally recognize as you. You are the love.”
