COLORADO 🇺🇸- I’ll be doing some Puffin viewing this summer so I’m starting my bird catching practicing now at our Colorado cabin up at 7,000 feet of elevation. I’ve got lots of improvements to make but here is my first official birding outing. I believe I captured a Pygmy Nuthatch, a House Finch or Cassin’s Finch, and a Violet-green Swallow. I’ll say this much about bird photography, a lot of patience is needed and this is harder than I expected!!

COLORADO - I’m hoping to be back online soon! For those who don’t know, I own a CPA firm so I tend to disappear from January - April. But Tax Day is imminent which means it is my SPRING! Every year April 16 feels like a rebirth, a delayed Easter, my New Year’s Day. Yesterday while driving I passed this Bald Eagle on a rock overlooking the town of Fort Collins. Some say the sight of a Bald Eagle symbolizes a period of renewal, of transformation, a time to embrace personal growth and the overcoming of challenges. The past 2 years have been the most challenging of my life, both professionally and personally. I’m ready for a rebound!

MINNESOTA 🇺🇸 - My daughter has been trying to describe the Minnesota Winter sky to her friends in New York City. I arrived into Minnesota earlier than her for the Holidays, and sent her a photo saying she could expect the typical Minnesota weather. She responded saying “It’s my favorite color: Minneapolis.” That saying is going to stick with me. So I present to you the newest color on the color wheel: Minneapolis. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a peaceful and happy night.

COLORADO 🇺🇸 - Berghütte (Mountain Cabin) at sunrise! I’m rarely up for sunrise but today I opened my eyes at just the right moment, it was so beautiful out that I ran outside! There was a plump rabbit sitting next to the cabin. This first photo is in sharp contrast to the photos following (swipe ⬅️) which were taken last weekend with snow on the ground! I even had to shovel. I spent a long while watching 6 deer through a short but rampant snow shower. Once it blew over and the sun came out they shook the snow off their backs and grazed in our front yard. I’m loving cabin life!

COLORADO - Introducing our new mountain cabin “Berghütte”! A week ago we closed on 6 acres of land in Northern Colorado with a horse barn and this small rustic hideaway. The best part is it is close enough to our home and office that we can stay there any day we choose. Today, Thanksgiving, we took our kids there for the first time and spent hours playing Hearts (which is the best card game for 4 - all you need is one deck of cards!). This photo was taken as we were walking to the car this evening. I love this place because it resonates with me in personal ways, and brings us back to a simpler life. Though 2025 has been one of our toughest years, we have so much to be thankful for, and today we count our blessings.

CROATIA 🇭🇷- You feel like you are standing in the middle of the waterfall. Because you are. PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK boasts over 20 kilometers (about 12.5 miles) of interconnected boardwalks to bring you right up to and over the action. This waterfall is not one of the largest in the park by far, but was one of my favorites. Commonly referred to as “Opera Falls”, the “Slapovi Milke Trnine” (Slap = Waterfall) was named after the famous Croatian Opera Singer who generously donated to conservation of the area. The water cascades down layers of travertine rock covered by tufa (which has to do with hollow, pourous rock created from dissolved calcium covered with plants, algae and moss). SWIPE ⬅️ to see a behind the scenes photo of the boardwalk leading into the area of these falls.

SLOVENIA 🇸🇮- CAPITOL CITY OF LJUBLJANA - St Nicolas Cathedral. This Baroque Church from 1707 is one of the prettiest I’ve seen.
• The exterior is lovely, with 2 exterior bell towers and 8 clock faces, and a bell dating back to 1326.
• The Fresco Ceiling was painted by Giulio Quaglio is absolutely spectacular (more on that below for the curious).
• I love the black and white checkerboard floor - can I install that in my house?
• The pair of 2 bronze doors are the most surprising. They were installed very recently in 1996, to celebrate the 1,250 anniversary of Christianity in Slovenia, and were commemorated by a visit from Pope John Paul II. The Pope himself is depicted on one of the doors (“The Slovene Door”). He looks down on scenes in Slovenian history including the Crusades and the 1991 Homeland War. The sculpture is so realistic you almost expect him to begin a Papal Pronouncement. The other door (“The Ljubljana Door”) was my personal favorite. It depicts 6 Bishops jutting out of the door, standing above the crucified Christ. It is notable that neither door has an actual handle. You grasp the sculpture itself to open the door. Can you imagine what these bronze doors must have looked like before the patina?• Last, I cannot overlook the hidden gem painting of what I affectionately refer to as “Superman Jesus”!

MORE ABOUT THE CEILING: it “shows the transfiguration of St. Nicholas that covers the vault of the nave. Around the edges, Christians are being persecuted under emperors Nero and Diocletian amid angels, apostles, and other figures in various costumes and poses, some toppling out of false frames and others leaning against fake architectural elements, some at their exact moment of a violent death. With a series of clever features, including two false domes, Quaglio achieved such wonderful illusionist effects that you’ll be hard pressed to differentiate between reality and the imaginary.” (From the blog stephentravels.com)

SLOVENIA 🇸🇮 - VINTGAR GORGE - ŠUM SLAP - At the end of your hike down the Vintgar Gorge, part of Triglav National Park, is the crown jewel Šum Slap (“Slap” means “Waterfall” in Slovenian). The falls were named for the murmur heard from afar, resonating through the hills as the 13 meter (42.5’) drop deepens the turquoise colored pool below. As we were last of the day to exit the canyon, we had this beauty all to ourselves. Bonus: there is a geocache steps from this spot.

SLOVENIA 🇸🇮 - CANYONING - Despite my love of ice and snow through photography while in my snowshoes, I do not enjoy swimming or plunging into cold water. Canyoning (essentially a way of exploring a canyon from top to bottom) in a cold mountain stream is something I thought I’d never do. But, doesn’t it look fun?? So this excursion during our 30th wedding anniversary trip was my idea. Over a year ago I booked a guide with and the day has finally arrived. We set out with 3 Slovenians to Canyon Grmecica on the edge of Triglav (3glav) National Park. We donned 3 mm wetsuits and rappelling gear, and set off hiking upward until we reached the start of the canyon. We then rappelled, jumped, scrambled, slid and swam back down inside the canyon. Every once in a while you’ve just got to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. I can tell you the 4 things that got me through this: (1) I felt safe with our wonderful guide (Thank You Urban!), (2) the incredible beauty - I’m talking 5 full senses here - of the canyon, (3) watching my husband of 30 years doing this with me and (4) literally turning my brain off. I’m not an extreme sports person, heck I literally haven’t even jumped into a pool since I’ve been married, so stepping on the edge of a cliff and ‘launching confidently’ toward the cold and deep water below was only going to happen if I didn’t look too long or put much thought into it. And at the end when Urban offered a bonus of floating back to the car in the cold river, heck I couldn’t get enough of it, so into the rapid current we went (last photo). Here’s to 30 years of marriage, still having fun, adventuring to new places, trying new things, and doing it again for the next 30 years.
