Mariaberget, Stockholm, Sweden
Mariaberget is a historic neighborhood on Södermalm island, in central Stockholm, known for its bohemian, hip, and creative atmosphere, often compared to Brooklyn. The area is home to Monteliusvägen, a short trail that provides stunning panoramic views of the entire city. After walking the trail, with sweeping city views, we navigated our way down the cobblestone streets lined with 18th-century wooden houses, soaking in the charming atmosphere. Along the way, we visited an opening at a small art gallery, before heading to Fotografiska (Museum of Photography) for the Anton Corbijn exhibit.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, is a beautiful maze of centuries-old buildings that tower above the twisting little streets. If you are a fan of narrow medieval streets, like I am, then it’s the ideal place to visit! Mårten Trotzigs Gränd is renowned as the narrowest lane in the city (1st photo in the carousel). Located in the middle of old town, it connects two main roads (Västerlanggatan and Prästgatan) with a very skinny staircase. Measuring only 35 inches wide at its narrowest point, this captivating alleyway is one of the narrowest in Europe. Just a short 3 minute walk from there is Stortorget, Stockholm’s oldest public square, famous for its colorful, historic merchant houses (photos 2-5). The iconic, brightly colored buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Another 4 minute walk from there, is The Royal Palace of Stockholm (photo 6). The Royal Palace, also known as Kungliga Slottet, is a magnificent Baroque-style palace. It serves as the official residence of the Swedish monarch and offers a glimpse into the grandeur of this symbol of Sweden’s monarchy. The atmosphere in Gamla Stan is a mix of bustling tourist areas with shops and cafes, and quieter, tranquil lanes that evoke 17th-century Stockholm. Although Gamla Stan is quite small, it’s easy to spend a day there, wandering the cobblestone streets lined with well-preserved buildings, where each street you look down is more picturesque than the last.

Tromsø, Norway
Tromsø is known as the “Gateway to the Arctic” and “Paris of the North”. The city center contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest dating from 1789. Tromsø Harbour stands as a pivotal transportation hub for Northern Norway, offering a bustling maritime environment with a blend of modern infrastructure and historic charm. We ate lunch in the historic center at a video game themed hamburger restaurant called Burgr. If you are a 70s, 80s, or 90s kid, then you’d love the nostalgic atmosphere, full of old classics from Nintendo, Sega, and Atari. Plus, the burgers were delicious too! Then we headed towards Tromso’s most known landmark: the Arctic Cathedral. This modern, pointed, concrete and glass structure was inspired by snow and ice, and is a great subject for architecture photography.

Flakstadøya, Lofoten, Norway.
Flakstadøya is a scenic island in the Lofoten archipelago, Norway, known for its dramatic landscapes. During our time in this area, we saw livestock, Norwegian architecture, and stunning natural beauty. For lunch, we stopped at Lofoten Beach Camp and tried traditional Norwegian waffles topped with brown cheese, lingonberry berry jam, and sour cream.
