Sometimes you just have to stand in the rain and trust that something better is happening on the other side.

I generally prefer photographing with the sun somewhere behind me. On this particular evening in Garden of the Gods, that meant standing in the rain while hoping there was a little sunshine waiting behind the storm.

There was.

As the rain moved through, sunlight broke underneath the clouds and lit the main rock formations while the sky behind them remained dark. Then came the rainbow.

I stuck around after the rainbow disappeared, too. The light became much quieter, but those moody skies were too good to leave behind.

Both of these photographs are panoramas made from multiple individual frames stitched together. I could certainly shoot a single wide image and crop it into a panoramic shape, but I prefer building them this way. More resolution, more detail, and a much larger finished image.

Same place. Same evening. Completely different moods.

And a pretty good reminder that sometimes the best thing a landscape photographer can do is get wet and stay put.

These are exactly the kinds of Colorado moments I love putting into my annual Landscape Photography Calendar. Voting for the 2027 Calendar is still open, and we're getting very close to the final selections on September 14. Link in comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Yesterday's sunrise at Garden of the Gods was one of those mornings.

The sky couldn't make up its mind. One moment the clouds were dark and brooding. A minute later, the rising sun found a gap and painted Cathedral Rock and Sleeping Giant in warm light. Then it disappeared again.

These five photographs were made only minutes apart. The clouds barely moved, yet the mood changed completely.

It's a good reminder that when the forecast looks dynamic, the hardest part isn't finding a composition. It's already being there when the light decides to perform.

Stay in position. Stay patient. Stay ready.

Nature rarely gives an encore.

Which version speaks to you most? The warm glow or the darker, moodier light?

Winter always surprises me.

It's the season that asks the most from a photographer. Cold mornings. Frosty fingers. Snowstorms. Fog. Quiet landscapes. And every now and then, a sunrise that makes all of it worthwhile.

These are the five winter photographs that have risen to the top so far, but the race isn't over. Several images are separated by only a handful of votes, which means there's still time for your favorite to move up the rankings.

Final image selections for the ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿณ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐˜† ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ will be revealed on ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฐ.

Autumn turned out to be one of the toughest seasons to narrow down.

These five images have risen to the top, but they weren't the only contenders. Several others came within just a handful of votes, and the standings have shifted more than once. That's what makes this process so much fun. It's not just my calendar. It's one we're building together.

If your favorite didn't make today's Top Five, don't worry. Voting is still open, and there is still time to help shape the final collection before selections are announced on **September 14**.

This morning you saw Spring. Tonight, it's Summer's turn.

These are the five Summer images ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—น๐˜† leading the voting for my 2027 Landscape Photography Calendar.

And once again, ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—น๐˜† is the important word.

Nothing has been selected yet. I'm watching the voting, watching which photographs move, and ultimately trying to build a collection of 12 images that works together as a calendar.

The final selections won't be revealed until ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฐ.

And if your favorite ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฑ make the Top Five, tell me which one you're pulling for.

You can see every candidate and vote at:

Some of the oldest living trees on Earth have spent thousands of years watching the night sky turn overhead.

This ancient Bristlecone Pine has witnessed more sunsets, moonrises, and seasons than I can begin to imagine. To create this photograph, I blended a series of images taken over time, allowing the stars to trace their circular path around Polaris. The result is a reminder that while we measure time in moments, nature often measures it in centuries.

This image is one of the candidates for my

It took me more than one visit to Bryce Canyon National Park to figure this place out.

The first time, I came away with nice photographs. The second time, I came away understanding the light. For a few short minutes after sunrise, the hoodoos seem to ignite from within. The glow is subtle, fleeting, and easy to miss if you're standing in the wrong place.

That's one of the things I love most about landscape photography. Sometimes the lesson isn't finding a new location. It's returning to an old one.

As the saying goes, ๐—ณ/๐Ÿด ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ.

A quiet valley. Weathered barns. Morning fog drifting through the middle ground. Snow-covered peaks catching the day's first light.

The mountains were awake long before the valley. While the summits glowed in warm sunrise light, the old barns patiently waited in the shadows for their turn. It only lasted a few minutes, but those few minutes felt like Colorado distilled into a single scene.

This is one of my favorite autumn candidates for the

When you think of Colorado, what comes to mind first?

The mountains, the historic barns, the changing aspens, or mornings like this where all of them come together?
