Spring is one of the most critical times in a moose's life. These new calves survival depends almost entirely on their mother.

A cow moose spends nearly a year carrying her calf before giving birth in late May or early June. During the first few weeks, calves are vulnerable to predators, cold weather, and exhaustion. Mothers often keep them hidden in thick willows, moving cautiously and staying hyper-alert to anything that might pose a threat.

What many people don't realize is that moose mothers can be incredibly protective. While they may appear calm, a cow defending her calf can be one of the most formidable animals in the Tetons. Those long legs that help navigate deep snow are equally effective at delivering powerful kicks when danger approaches.

These moments only last for a short time. Within a few months, these wobbly-legged calves will be running, browsing vegetation alongside their mother, and preparing for their first winter in the mountains.

It's Moose Monday here in Grand Teton National Park and this bull was in full rut mode — antlers polished, neck swollen, lip curled, and completely locked into the ancient rhythm of fall in the Tetons. During the rut, bulls roam constantly, searching for cows, sparring with rivals, and advertising their dominance with deep grunts and imposing displays like this one.

It’s one of the most intense and awe-inspiring wildlife spectacles in North America.

A powerful bull moose wanders the snowy sage flats of Grand Teton National Park as winter settles into the valley. After an intense fall rut spent competing for mates and defending territory, bull moose enter winter exhausted — often having lost a significant amount of body weight during the breeding season.

Despite their massive size, moose are surprisingly quiet and graceful movers through deep snow and wetlands. Their long legs act like natural snowshoes, helping them navigate harsh winter conditions in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Moments like this are a reminder of just how wild and untamed the Tetons still are.

We've made it to the end of the week! I hope everyone is having a great

Honestly, this fox might be the most relatable thing in Jackson Hole right now… laying belly-down in the snow just trying to cool off after another unexpectedly warm spring day in the Tetons.

Red foxes grow incredibly thick winter coats to survive brutal mountain temperatures, but when conditions warm up, it’s common to see them stretched out in the snow using it like nature’s air conditioning. Even wildlife in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem appreciates a cold patch on a sunny afternoon.

Remember, a fed fox is a dead fox. Never feed wildlife, and report those who do.

A small herd of elk clears a fence during a spring snowstorm in the Tetons — a reminder of just how athletic and resilient these animals are. The word “wapiti” comes from the Shawnee language and means “white rump,” referring to the light-colored patch visible as elk run through the landscape.

Elk are among the largest members of the deer family, and despite their size, they can easily leap fences over 8 feet tall while migrating across the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Seasonal migrations like these are critical for survival, helping elk follow food sources and avoid the harshest winter conditions in the mountains.

Moments like this are one of the many reasons wildlife photography in the Tetons never gets old.

Last autumn I was fortunate to come across this beautiful bull moose in Grand Teton National Park. Moving quietly through the aspens — massive, calm, and completely in control of his space.

At that time of year, they’re at their peak. Those antlers—grown fresh each season—can span well over five feet across, built for one purpose: the rut. But outside of that intensity, moments like this feel almost peaceful.

It’s always a reminder… no matter how many times I see them, moose never feel ordinary.

This is the season where everything is on the line… strength, endurance, and the right to keep his harem together.

May the Fourth Be With You!

Moody Mornings with Mount Moran. There’s a reason Oxbow Bend is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Tetons. On still mornings like this, the Snake River becomes a perfect mirror—reflecting Mount Moran, one of the range’s most recognizable peaks.

At 12,610 feet, Moran stands a bit apart from the main Teton skyline, giving it that commanding, solitary presence. Look closely and you can spot the Skillet Glacier on its eastern face—one of the few named glaciers in the range, and a classic ski descent for those bold enough to earn it.

Oxbow Bend itself is more than just a photo stop. This slow-moving stretch of the Snake River creates prime habitat for moose, river otters, beavers, and a wide variety of birds. Early mornings often bring low-lying fog like this, as cool air settles into the river valley—adding just enough mystery to an already timeless scene.

Moments like this are why people have been drawn to this landscape for generations—long before it became a national park, and long after.
