My son and I spent a lot of time trying to name my truck on the drive from Morgantown, WV to Midland, TX and couldn’t find anything that suited.

So, the beast remains nameless.

Do you name your vehicles?

The Slug Bug Ranch opened just outside Conway, TX in 2002 and closed its doors in 2023. The bugs were moved to Amarillo, near the Big Texan along side I-40.

Old silos, a length of limos buried straight up and a run of old Volkswagen beetles inspired by the Cadillac Ranch are a fun place to express yourself - just beware of all the overspray when visiting on a typical windy day in the plains.

More from our trip to Radiator Springs… ahem, Glenrio, TX/NM.

Fun fact: the town was originally built as a railroad town, and then when Route 66 came through in the 1920’s, the town really took off.

The town was opportunistic, taking advantage of its border status by building its fuel stations on the Texas side to save on tax and the bars/restaurants on the New Mexico side because Texas was a dry state at the time.

Despite it being a busy, booming commercial area, the population of Glenrio peaked at 30 people. The hotel we viewed was run by the Warren family right up until its closure nearly 50 years ago.

We’re out in Texas for awhile, and decided to venture up to Amarillo to check out old Route 66. At the Rt 66 Historical Welcome Center, there was a poster of towns that died off when I-40 was built in the 1970’s.

Glenrino, TX/NM is a border town and was the inspiration for Radiator Springs in Pixar’s Cars movie. Since it was only 70 miles west and that movie was such an integral part of my teenaged boys lives as toddlers (but not anymore, I swear…. I swear!) of course we had to check it out.

All that remains is a the run down Texaco building, the old cafe (turned smoke shop) and the State Line.

Having successfully avoided turning one of my favorite hobbies into a job for most of the last decade, my desire to constantly buy new equipment has created a need. Not an urgent need, but a need nonetheless.

Then I figured… maybe people want me to capture their chaos, too!

Photographers are a dime a dozen. Everyone and their phone is peddling their craft. You can find those photographers everywhere. I, too, have enjoyed capturing sweet moments in a field at sunset and cherish those images.

But I want to capture real life.

The frustration in a lost match.

The last moments with a beloved pet.

The exhaustion of a 12hr shift in 20° weather.

The quiet reflection of sitting on your porch after surviving the bed time routine with a neurospicy kid.

The joyful, dirty faces of cousins spending summer on Papa’s farm.

The exhilaration of a hunt with a great dog.

When we look back at photos as a family, those are the ones our family lingers on the longest, and the ones my kids beg me over and over again to retrieve for them to look at again.

So, if you want polish and perfection and a highlight reel for social media… I am not the photographer for you.

But real life? The weird stuff? The chaos?

Text me.
