I hope y'all are getting outside and enjoying all the things Spring brings- like this Jack-in-the-Pulpit!!

Fun fact: jack-in-the-pulpits are a sequential hermaphrodite- they start out as male ♂️ and change to female as it gets older and larger, as producing female flowers require more energy! ♀️

⚠️ contains calcium oxalate and can cause skin irritation if touched and severe throat irritation and burning if consumed ☣️

We had a special visitor to the lake this week! I've seen very few of them, in different parts of the state, in deeper woods- but never in my backyard.

By and large, most still consider them a "least concern" species, with the exception of Partners in Flight who list them as a Yellow Watchlist species due to moderate population declines and moderate to high threats. 💔👎

And let me tell you, pretty sure this Red-headed Woodpecker is a real-life angry bird. They are truly stunning! I hope he hangs around a bit so I am able to photograph him in a better light and without rain! 😍

The Common Grackle!

They get a bad rap, but I think they are an absolutely stunning bird- look at those colors!!

A few fun facts:

If you study their behavior, you may see a Common Grackle spreading its wings over on the ground, letting ants crawl over its body and feathers in a practice called "anting". Ants secrete formic acid which can act as an anti-parasitic agent for the birds. In addition to ants, grackles have been seen using walnut juice, lemons and limes, marigold blossoms, chokecherries, and mothballs in a similar fashion. 🐜🍋

Did you know the oldest know Common Grackle was at least 23 years old when he was killed by a raptor in Minnesota in 1994. 😲

Last week's cutest diver award went to the Pied-billed Grebe. I just love these little guys!

Fun fact about most grebes- they eat their own feathers to line their gizzard in order to aid in digestion and prevent punctures from bones/exoskeletons ingested as part of their diet.

The adults also feed their own feathers to their young soon after hatching!

They eat so many feathers for protection- at times they make up 50% or more of the stomach cavity contents!
