A Morning on the Maine Coast

Last month I took a harbor seal cruise out of Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine. It turned out to be a fun morning on the water with plenty of wildlife to photograph along the way.

The harbor seals were the main attraction, and we were able to see quite a few of them, including an adorable young seal pup resting on the rocks. We also encountered cormorants, a group of female Common Eiders riding the ocean swells, and even a Common Loon. Seeing a loon out on the ocean in August was an unexpected sight for me!

And then there was our very persistent gull, who decided that the front of the boat was a great place to land and ride along with us for a while.

The cruise was a great way to spend a summer morning along the southern Maine coast, and the crew did an excellent job making the trip both enjoyable and informative.

Here are some photographs from the morning, along with a look at beautiful Perkins Cove.

I recently heard from a local woman who wanted some photos of her beloved goats. Changes in her circumstances mean that she will soon have to part with her goats, and she wanted to have some professional photographs to remember the animals that have been such an important part of her life.

I was happy to spend some time with her and the herd. As you might expect when photographing goats, there was plenty of personality on display! I came home with quite a few entertaining expressions among the more traditional portraits.

She now has a gallery of about 100 photos of her goats to enjoy. And I came home with some homemade goat milk ice cream that she insisted I take. I’d say that was a pretty good trade.

Wishing her all the best in the days ahead and I hope these photos bring plenty of smiles and good memories for years to come.

Beauty in the Details

I took my kayak out on Lake Winnipesaukee yesterday and came home with several images I liked, but this was my favorite - a white water lily, an unopened bud, and a tiny damselfly that chose the perfect perch.

Photographing from the water offers a different perspective and often reveals subjects you might otherwise miss. That’s also the idea behind my upcoming Wildlife Photography from the Water workshop through ArtWorks on September 19, where we’ll explore techniques for photographing wildlife and other subjects from a kayak or canoe.

Interested in joining me? Call ArtWorks at 603-323-8041 to register.

Neighborhood Visitors

Recently, this deer family made an appearance in my neighborhood. The fawns were especially fun to watch, and I was lucky enough to catch a few nice moments as the group wandered through the ferns and woods nearby. One of my favorite moments was watching the buck appear to gently groom one of the fawns.

Sometimes Wildlife Is Closer Than You Think

I’ve traveled hours for specific opportunities to photograph wildlife, but sometimes a memorable encounter can be found much closer to home.

Recently, while in my yard, I kept hearing persistent chirping that sounded as though it had to be coming from a nest. I explored the nearby woods and eventually discovered a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker nest tucked inside a tree cavity!

I watched both parents take turns feeding their hungry chick, although the youngster was remarkably difficult to see. I took nearly 1,000 photographs and only found the chick clearly visible in about four of them!

Beyond the Puffins: Razorbills of Machias Seal Island

The puffins may get most of the attention, but the razorbills were also fascinating to watch and photograph. These striking black-and-white seabirds are related to puffins and use their wings to “fly” underwater while pursuing fish.

I especially enjoyed capturing their animated interactions and dramatic poses—another memorable part of my recent morning on Machias Seal Island!

A Daylight Surprise

I recently had my first encounter with a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron while photographing along the Massachusetts coast.

Despite their name, these distinctive birds may forage during either the day or night. Still, finding one perched in broad daylight and remaining in relatively clear view felt like a rare opportunity.

Massachusetts is near the northern edge of their breeding range, making the sighting especially exciting. I was able to spend several quiet minutes appreciating its striking black-and-white face, pale yellow crown, and those remarkably long toes. It remained in clear view for several minutes and offered a wonderful variety of poses. At one point, a quick grooming pause looked almost as though it were thinking, “Now, what should my next pose be?”

A memorable first sighting.
