bclements1978 I create visual stories, or find them being told and capture them. I stop. I capture.

I'm interested in color, texture, shape, and contrast and when I find either extreme - well organized patterns, or chaos and serenity coexisting - I'm smitten.

Fall colors at the Berry College Old Mill 🍂
Built in 1930 by Berry students and staff, the Old Mill features a 42-foot wooden overshot waterwheel - one of the largest in the United States. It’s peaceful and timeless, especially this time of year.

On the ocean side of Quarry Cove at Yaquina Head, the basalt is rough and jagged, shaped by constant waves and weather. The fog hung low when we were there, softening the horizon but making the dark rock and turquoise water stand out even more.

Quarry Cove at Yaquina Head was once a rock quarry, but today it’s a sheltered cove with basalt outcrops shaped by the waves. When we visited in the afternoon, the sun broke through the fog and the waves were calm, giving the whole place a serene feel.

Yaquina Head’s beach is made up of large, smooth basalt rocks formed by ancient lava flows. When the waves recede, the stones tumble over each other with a deep rolling sound, unique to this stretch of the Oregon Coast.

Standing tall since 1873, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is the tallest on the Oregon Coast at 93 feet. Built on ancient basalt cliffs, it has guided mariners for over a century while overlooking one of the most dramatic stretches of shoreline. From the beach below, the combination of black basalt cobbles, pounding surf, and the lighthouse on the headland makes for a striking view of history set against rugged geology.

Yaquina Head juts into the Pacific on Oregon’s central coast, its cliffs made of basalt from lava flows over 14 million years ago. Waves have carved sea caves and arches into the rock, creating dramatic views that highlight both the region’s geologic past and its rugged coastal beauty.

Looking out from Devil’s Punchbowl on the Oregon Coast. The sandstone cliffs drop directly into the Pacific, where waves break against the rock below. With the fog obscuring the horizon, the coastline disappears from view, leaving only the ocean stretching into the distance.

🪨 Devil’s Punchbowl
This natural rock formation near Otter Rock, Oregon, was created when two sea caves collapsed and left behind a hollow bowl. At high tide, the waves crash and swirl inside, making it look like the ocean is churning in place. It’s one of the Oregon Coast’s most unique geological features and a popular stop along Highway 101.

Spray and fog on Otter Crest Loop (aka the old Hwy 101) — the scenic detour that skirts Cape Foulweather, named by Captain Cook in 1778. Basalt cliffs, Sitka spruce, and Pacific swells; every wave blew back up the rocks like steam. You can even spot the Lookout at Otter Crest perched on the rim.

Moody swells at Cape Meares, Oregon this weekend. This headland anchors the north end of the Three Capes Scenic Route and looks out over rugged sea stacks. It’s also home to a 19th-century lighthouse and the wind-shaped Octopus Tree—a centuries-old Sitka spruce. Loved how the long lines of swell stacked up under the cloud deck.
