Let’s hear it for daylight savings time - yesterday I woke up at 3:30 to get here for sunrise and I still barely made it snowshoeing up here. Now sunrises and sunsets are more attainable. I also get here early to beat all the families bringing their kids up from the desert to go sledding 🐤🪱 this is the March Madness Vegas has been waiting for, barely any snow has been up here this winter. Might finally be time for some winter camping

Over the weekend, I woke up a little before four to catch sunrise at Bryce Canyon after an hour and a half drive from Brian Head, UT. Foggy weather had other plans. I was really hoping to see some snowy hoodoos, but I suppose low hanging fog will suffice. Funny enough, multiple sites said sunrise point is NOT a great place to see sunrise.. someone even suggested sunset point at sunrise. I am confusion. America explain.

Last of my Bay Area pics.. for now. The first one I had zero plans for, it was just from a stop on the highway near Big Sur. Later that day I got a fridge magnet of a very similar photo, so now I’m thinking I’ll just start making fridge magnets instead of covering all my walls 😂

Of course I had to throw in a Golden Gate picture. The fog was much better than I expected since apparently it’s more of a summer phenomenon. I wasn’t able to get any long exposures of the fog to make it look wavy, but I was inspired so I just got a 1-11 stop ND filter. Stay tuned for daytime long exposures - just need to find some waterfalls in the desert lol. There is one in Red Rock outside of Vegas that should be flowing well soon enough when snow in the mountains starts melting.

Still flooding my profile with Bay Area pics until further notice. I got both of these at sunrise yesterday before hitting the road back home. The first is close to a big drop down to the ocean which was a bit spooky - I’d rather not go for round two of falling off a cliff. I saw some footsteps right next to the edge but thought no thanks and made something else work. The trees are on the same road to Point Reyes only about 10 miles before the ocean, so it was super easy to tackle both in the same trip.

And now it’s back to work today for the first time in 2025 since I had New Year’s Day off and took PTO Thursday and Friday last week. Time to start planning another extended weekend. I’ll take any recommendations 🫡

I did it again 🤦‍♂️😂 the break in the foam you see in the first pic is from my feet being in the way of a wave receding into the ocean. I mean it did turn out to be one of my favs, so it was worth it. It made for a good minimalist photo. I ~might~ have dry shoes by the end of today since I have no plans to go near the water but we’ll see. They’ll probably still be wet from yesterday 😞. This is such a cool beach though with all black sand. I read Pfeiffer Beach (Keyhole Arch) has purple sand and I was thinking it might all be purple before I saw it, but turns out it was tiny patches of kinda purple sand. Reality < expectations. This beach actually has all black sand but it’s apparently one of the least visited beaches in the area. I suppose the 400 steps to get down here, then back up, might have something to do with that. No skipping leg day allowed at Black Sands Beach.

The sun lining up at Keyhole Arch thankfully wasn’t nearly as busy as Firefall in Yosemite which will be here next month, and I’ve been to Firefall the past two years so I thought I better switch it up a little and try a new once/year event. Keyhole Arch and my first trip to the Bay Area sounded like a great idea to take on all kinds of new adventures. I took a page out of Icarus’ book and went into the sea when I metaphorically flew too close to the sun (trying to get a great photo) and got my feet drenched when a big wave came. TMI I didn’t have any towels and I wanted to keep my only dirty clothes from the day before more fresh for the gym, so I used my underwear from the day before to dry my feet before putting on another pair of socks and shoes.. Then I gambled again and got those wet too when another big wave came 😂 I clearly didn’t learn anything from Icarus and the dangers of excessive ambition/excitement, but if wet socks and shoes are all I have to deal with, life’s too short not to risk it. I feel obligated to make some prints of these now though haha

Pinnacles NP yesterday marked 1/3 (21/63) of US National Parks I’ve been to. Each of them has their own unique things that make them amazing, but I suppose if I had to rank my top 5 so far it would be:
1) Yosemite
2) Channel Islands
3) Zion
4) Yellowstone
5) White Sands
These are the top ones I could think of as I write this, but ask me tomorrow and I could have a completely different list lol. For context, I added my fav pics from each.

It was quite the setup taking a long exposure with the city lights illuminating Red Rock Canyon’s walls. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of this time of year since the sun sets so early with the winter solstice coming soon, but it does make it pretty convenient to get nightscapes at a reasonable time since astronomical twilight ended at 5:59pm last night in Red Rock making the sky completely dark at 6pm. So I can still be “that guy” and get to bed at 8 and be able to take photos of the night sky. It would be nice to get off work with sun still out though. I can work with both I suppose, but only 194 days until summer solstice woot woot

Such an awesome experience getting to see this apparently rare comet last night. My only plans were to get on the mountains west of Vegas to prevent any obstructions and reduce the light pollution, but it ended up being the place to be. There was quite a pack of us parked on a random gravel road just over the mountains to see it. Shoutout to the couple I met who got there before me and set up right by this Joshua tree for letting me steal their spot to grab this shot. According to space.com, the comet will “put on its best showing” until October 26, so there’s still plenty of time if you haven’t seen it yet! And no you don’t need a camera or telescope - it was easily visible to the naked eye.

Me - Say no more

Although probably didn’t need to go to a cholla cactus minefield to get sunlight. Signs on the road said there was a beach about 5 miles down the road.. but dodging jumping cholla adds more spice to life

I’ve had to take a pause on photography for a while to focus on some other things that needed attention, c’est la vie. Got an awesome opportunity to jump back into it at Lower Antelope Canyon. Huge thank you to my lil sis .gesink for letting me tag along on her tour. Ended up being timed perfectly to catch some rays coming in. I take back what I said a while ago about Buckskin Gulch being a substitute for Antelope Canyon - they’re both such cool slot canyons you’ll need to see both of them 🤷‍♂️ but they’re close enough you could hit both in a day. You might prefer Buckskin Gulch if you’re claustrophobic though, Antelope Canyon is slim
