Do mourning doves always look this peaceful, or are they simply good actors?
Their soft colors and gentle expressions fit beautifully into the quiet woodland scenery.

Life Between the Reeds 🌿
Can you find both kinds of wetland birds in this set?
The streaked female Red-winged Blackbirds nearly disappear into the vegetation, while the Canada Geese bring a much larger presence to the water.

Different sizes, different strategies, and the same wetland neighborhood made this walk feel like a quick tour of the local residents.

When the Swallows Finally Cooperated 🐦

Have you ever almost called it a day, only to have the wildlife show up at the last possible second?

On July 17, my son and I were walking the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk under a smoky sky from wildfires burning somewhere in Canada. And yes, we were in Virginia—because apparently the smoke wanted a road trip.

We weren’t seeing any wildlife and were about ready to call it quits when my son pointed out a group of Barn Swallows sitting in a tree. I raised my camera, and BAM! They took off.

If you follow Walking With Camera, you may remember that last year I worked hard just to get these little ninjas in the frame. This time, they sat around waiting for me before launching into flight. Funny how that works—sometimes the birds just decide to wing it.

A huge thank-you to my son for spotting them. These are the moments that make every walk worth it.

Fresh catch, express delivery. 🐟🦅

Can you imagine trying to carry lunch home while flying?

This osprey passed overhead with its catch held firmly in its talons. Moments like this happen quickly, and tracking the bird while keeping the fish in the frame made the encounter even more rewarding.

No fishing pole, no cooler—just excellent eyesight and a very efficient set of talons.

What happens when a Great Blue Heron chooses the wrong place to stand?

The heron tried to enjoy the view while the blackbirds made repeated flybys. They may be much smaller, but nesting season apparently comes with unlimited confidence and absolutely no concern for size differences.

Apparently, this Great Blue Heron wandered into restricted airspace. 😄

Have you ever seen such small birds so determined to move a much larger neighbor along?

This Red-winged Blackbirds were taking no chances, making repeated passes over the heron until it got the message. The size difference didn’t seem to matter—when nesting territory is involved, attitude wins.

A Quiet Family Breakfast 🦌
How many deer did you spot before the fawn stole the scene?

Two adult white-tailed deer browse beneath the trees while a spotted fawn stays close, sampling the same patch of ground and keeping an eye on the family. The woods are calm, the menu is fresh, and nobody appears interested in sharing a table.

The adults move deeper into the shade while the fawn follows along, still wearing those unmistakable summer spots. It is a small glimpse of how young deer learn the daily routine—watch, copy, nibble, repeat.

One flower, two very different approaches. 🐝🌼

Do you patiently wait your turn, or make a dramatic entrance?

While one bee settled in for lunch, a tiny visitor flew into the frame like it had somewhere very important to be. I was concentrating on the main subject and didn’t notice the little photobomber until I reviewed the image later.

Sometimes the unexpected guest makes the photograph even better.
