Walking with Camera

Walking with Camera Started walking at 412 lbs, now around 250! What began as steps for health turned into steps toward happiness—with a camera in hand.

I traded snacks for snapshots, and now I share the view. Hope my photos (and bad jokes) make your day a bit brighter!

Osprey Lunch Flight

Where do you go when lunch has wings and a tail?

An osprey lifts off from the dock area carrying a fish, then flies low across the water. The bird passes pilings, signs, rocks, open water, and shoreline, keeping hold of the catch as it moves through the refuge scene.

The clip follows the flight from takeoff into open space, with the fish visible beneath the osprey in several frames. That is one way to beat the lunch rush: bring your own takeout and skip the bag.

Ground-Level Lookout
What do you think this rabbit heard in the grass?
An Eastern Cottontail paused at ground level with ears raised and one eye fixed on the trail. The photograph was made at Leesylvania State Park on June 4, 2026.

It had a hare appointment and did not stay long.

Milkweed Leaf Patrol

Who else is walking the milkweed highway today?

Small red-and-black insects move across milkweed leaves while the camera follows the plant closely. The frames show them shifting from leaf edges to the central stem, with water droplets and chewed leaf edges adding the quiet details of the scene.

The action is small, but the traffic pattern is clear: up the stem, across the leaf, pause, and continue. No posted speed limit, although several of them seemed to treat the leaf vein like a lane marker.

Balancing Act in the Reeds
Have you ever watched a red-winged blackbird balance on a reed?
A narrow perch, a bright shoulder patch, and a confident stance created a classic wetland scene.

The reed moved; one of the marsh’s Chihuahua birds acted as if it had not—small perch, big bark.

Flower-Top Bee Visit

How much can happen on one small yellow flower?

A bee works over the center of the bloom while the camera stays close and steady. Across the short clip, the flower remains the whole stage: yellow petals, dark center, soft green background, and one very busy visitor moving through the details.

It is a tiny scene, but it has the full park schedule built in: land, work, adjust, repeat. The bee did not file a flight plan, but it definitely kept the meeting short.

Heron Crossing
Can you hear the slow wingbeats of this great blue heron?
The bird crossed the green landscape with the calm power of something that has done this a thousand times.

Huge wings and a graceful silhouette made the sequence impossible to ignore. No boarding pass, no baggage fee, and still better legroom than most airlines.

Always on Alert
Which squirrel looks most prepared for trouble?
Two Eastern Gray Squirrels paused in the grass with alert eyes and tails ready for action. The photograph was made at Veterans Memorial Park on July 6, 2026.

They were clearly nuts about multitasking.

Red-bellied Woodpecker on the Move
Did this woodpecker pause to listen or to pose?
Pressed against the tree trunk, it held still for one brief portrait before continuing its search.

Woodland photography often happens in seconds between long stretches of waiting. The woodpecker, naturally, refused to knock before leaving.
