✨ Resetting for 2026 ✨

As I step into a new year with Jennifer Bailey Photography, I’m choosing growth with grace.
My goals for 2026 are simple but meaningful:

• Showing up more consistently here
• Continuing to build my brand with intention
• Learning to take breaks when needed (because balance matters)
• Saying yes to more family sessions
• Expanding into studio portraits I truly love creating
• Expanding my Headshot Portfolio

This year is about progress, not perfection—serving my clients well while protecting my creativity and joy. I’m excited for what’s ahead and thankful for everyone who continues to support my small business all these years🤍

I have had some clients and even newbie photographers ask me what makes your images better than my smart phone. Here is a quick run down that I hope makes some sense and helps.

1. Knowledge and skills

2. Auto is not your friend.. it’s failing you…

3. Smartphone are doing computational photography. ( smart ) it’s in the name…
When a smartphone takes a photo it take 3 instantly
It take one underexposed, one exposed correctly and one overexposed… then it combines them into one…

For a dedicated camera it’s called HDR photography some have a HDR MODE other you do it manually..

The smartphone does a lot of work for you but it has its limits

A dedicated camera needs input from a knowledgeable person or it does a bad job.

Blurry is motion blur what causes that too slow of a shutter speed

Noise is caused by low light and High ISO will show more noise in a photo.

You got to learn to crawl before you can walk.. on top of learning to balance before you can walk!

That what you need to do with a camera 3 setting balanced to give you a good image.

Aperture is all about your background do you want that dreamy bokeh background? Use a wide aperture. A small number like f/1.2-f/4 do you want more of the background in focus try f/5.6-f/16
But the higher the number the less light enters the lens!!!

Now shutter speed
30”-1/30 will likely show motion but 1/60-1/250 should freeze most motion but for birding, wildlife and sports 1/500-1/8000 might be needed but again the higher the number the less light can hit the sensor.

ISO is the dreaded setting, sadly to balance everything it’s needed. So you want to keep it as low as possible but still end up with a good exposure by using the exposure meter! The higher the ISO number is the more visible noise in the image…

To tie everything together use the exposure meter you want it to read zero 0️⃣ on the exposure meter…

Your camera has a built in reflective light meter that read the intensity of the light based off your settings that’s why I can’t tell you exact settings to use.

It’s slightly a trial and error in the exposure meter will help you.

Hopefully that made some sense to you, and it was a crash course into manual photography.
