This has been a wonderful year for the tulips. I hope everyone gets a chance to go visit the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival this year in Mount Vernon. Beautiful times!

Enjoyed a beautiful day up in the Skagit Valley the other day and am just getting started with editing. The area has changed quite a bit since my last visit, and I certainly have reason to return again in the coming days!

While everyone seems to be rushing to the UW campus to see the cherry blossoms, I turned the steering wheel a different direction. I realized it had been ~18 years since my last visit! While much has changed, much has stayed the same.

Reminiscing about Joshua Tree National Park. What an incredible place! We had bluebird skies the entire visit (unfortunately), Barker Dam was still dry (filled a couple of days after we left), and Cholla Cactus Garden proper was still closed (still plenty of wandering available - HUGE area). Still, we had a fantastic time.

A resident coyote made itself at home in our campground and wandered about the sites at all times of the day. At night you could hear it sniffing around the tent, and howling to not-too-distant comrades.

The Hall of Horrors was a fun find! Who would have expected a slot canyon in the desert! It was not signed or advertised by the park. In fact, the hiking book generalized on it and falsely identified it as a broad area between two buttresses - probably at the park's encouragement.

Jumbo Rocks was my absolute favorite, with most all destinations walkable from the campground. Morning and evening were both great photography times.

I hope you enjoy this selection of images. The coyote is a phone pic.

Ah, the Teddy Bear cholla or, Jumping Cholla! You just want to love it and hug it and squeeze it - no you don't! The barbs will impale your skin even through thicker clothing. Once the barbs are in you their shape resists removal. It is a painful process!

That being said, they are a beautiful plant, especially when side lit or back lit.

The formal Cholla Cactus Garden was still closed due to renovation during my visit, but it is pretty easy to find a place to park on the side of the Pinto Basin Road and just wander amongst them. They really encompass a HUGE area - hundreds of acres! I only wish sunset would have offered a little more (the story of my visit!).

Arch Rock (pictured) and Heart Rock are very close to White Rock Campground (though you no longer park there). They are an easy walk from the TH along Pinto Basin Road.

Ever hear the term, "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight"? Well, this was a case of me bringing a gun to a knife fight! I don't know why, but I grabbed my big glass (probably all my experiences in Utah). What I didn't know was that this arch is in your face close! I did the best I could with my back against a solid wall, and thought, it is what it is.

Reviewing it upon coming home, I rather like the composition. It's a different take on what most photographers seem to offer, which I look at as a good thing. I hope you enjoy too.

Oh, and Happy Mother's Day!
