Just west of Grand Marais, at the quiet eastern end of Pictured Rocks, Sable Creek drops about seventy five feet down a staircase of old sandstone and then hurries the last half mile to Lake Superior. 💧

Follow the water down and the country opens up into something that stops people in their tracks. The Grand Sable Dunes roll on for something like five square miles, perched way up on top of the Grand Sable Banks, a wall of sand that climbs roughly three hundred feet straight up from the shoreline of the big lake. 🏞️

Stand on that rim on a clear day and Superior goes on forever, cold and blue and bigger than any words for it. The Ojibwe knew this stretch of shore long before the mapmakers came through, and the French left their name on it, grand sable, the great sands.

It is the kind of place that makes you feel small in the very best way. 🌲
