I've met this friend and her mom over the last six months or so. When I asked her mom if she'd want to drop by for some simple, clean white backdrop shots last week, mom's response was "She LOVES the studio." I'm so glad she stopped in.

When I first started picking up the camera, I was heavily focused on portraiture. It took me a long time to learn how to "pull back" and frame people in a larger context. However, in the studio, I also love getting back to my roots and focusing on their face. This friend's portrait almost brought me and her mom to tears.

Now that the heat index is over 100, it's time to move into the studio until fall!

Sarah dropped by earlier this week, and we grabbed some head shots for her student ID for the fall. We figured as long as the white backdrop and the flash were up, we might as well grab a few more casual images.

Let me tell you about this girl. She is tough, and she is SO so patient, and THAT is the kind of thing that allows me to pick up skills in a hurry.

Aubrey came out a couple of weeks ago as a willing participant to put up with my idiocy while I blocked in the use of the off-camera flash for some dance images. And man oh man, do I love the results. I love it when I learn in a hurry, and get some good images as a bonus!

Aubrey, thank you so much for coming out with me and putting up with me!

If there’s one primary thing I’ve learned over the last five years or so, it’s that you have to be prepared for anything. Make sure you “be there.”

We had plans to experiment with off - camera flash and water stuff, and maybe if it sprinkled a little bit, well, that would be okay. Clearly, God had other plans, and we went from a few sprinkles to the absolute bottom falling out in about 30 seconds. Sarah absolutely killed it.

If you want a glimpse into one of the most magical, joyful 3 minute photo sessions I’ve ever done, just scroll. I dare you to try not to smile.

Sarah: well done, my friend. This one goes in the books and on the wall.
