The Photo Society of Middle Tennessee State University is a student organization focused on bringing photographers together to learn and to grow their skills. All MTSU students are welcome to take part in the Photo Society, even if you aren't in the program! Meetings are held every Tuesday at 6:00PM during the semester in the McFarland Building. Meetings can cover a wide variety of photography rel

ated topics from demonstrations, conversations, hands-on workshops, friendly image reviews, and more! Once a month we also organize a gathering of students that we call an Instameet. For each Instameet we travel somewhere that will offer abundant opportunities to create fantastic images. Our previous Instameets have taken us to Nashville, Chattanooga, and Asheville, NC. Above all, our main goal is to help provide photography students with the community and support they need to be successful, both in their time in college as well as in their career.

Please join us for a public lecture by esteemed photographer Rahim Fortune, a visual artist from the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma who splits his time between Texas and New York City. Fortune’s work uses photography to examine American identity, focusing on family, community, migration, and the ways personal and collective histories are written onto the landscapes of Texas and the American South.

He is the author of I Can’t Stand to See You Cry (Loose Joints, 2021), nominated for the Paris Photo–Aperture Photobook of the Year and winner of the Rencontres d’Arles Louis Roederer Discovery Award (2022), and Hardtack (Loose Joints, 2024), nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize (2025). His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections including the High Museum of Art, LUMA Arles, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Public Lecture:
February 3
6:00 PM
Bragg Room 103

Both books will be available for purchase, and a book signing with the artist will follow the lecture.

Hosted by The Photo Society and The Baldwin Gallery and made possible by the MTSU Distinguished Lecture Fund.
